Adel’s Fatatre & Chicken Olle A Review by Hassan Hawash
Can’t Wait to Try!
What a pleasant drop in visit to ADEL’S FATATRE & CHICKEN OLLE! By pure luck or was it? Adel’s Fatatre & Chicken Olle appeared on my Facebook page. Having lived in Egypt and, of course, having experienced many a street food item there my curiosity was piqued and the temptation led me to go ahead and have a good look at what Adel had to offer. The pickings brought back memories of standing in feteer shops big and small for both savoury and sweet feteer creations in the port city of Alexandria, Egypt, bride of the Mediterranean.
Looking through the window of this shop brought those images out of my long-term recall memory. Watching the pastry chef, Adel, go through the motions of preparing the bubbly wafer thin dough folded upon itself once or twice at which point the pastry can be filled with anything from honey to beef and olives, but in the instance I was there, it was an occasion for basterma – cured beef – and eggs to fill the space between one of those folds. Once filled, the dough was folded over itself. I got to see the point at which the pastry was ready to be popped into the ‘furn’ which can be likened to a wood fire oven. Cooking time should only take a few minutes before it’s out again.
On this occasion, I decided to have the experience of watching the full production in its full illustrious choreographical constant movement of sprinkle, roll, fling, slap, fling, slap, stretch, spread, sprinkle, fold, heave, ho, plop and then the final defining moment when the serving size square bite size pieces are cut in the takeaway box. Oh, I must mention looking back on this experience, Adel’s feteer was absolutely delicious. Tislim ya Adel.
In my case, true to form, according to Adel’s assistant, daughter Mariam, who took my call, my order was ready within the twenty minutes as she had indicated. I was left with a very good impression by the ever so jovial pastry chef/owner oh so effusive and hospitable in making my friend and me welcome in his shop. Adel is truly a veritable bon vivant and as I saw he makes one and all feel welcome. On this visit, this bubbly personality was at his finest preparing his pastry and regaling us with stories similar to the one of meeting me, an unlikely Arab speaker especially by way of my appearance. “Wishuk mish masry abadan, he laughed in merriment.
I look forward to...
Read moreI flew in from NYC and we immediately drove like 45 mins straight to this place. It was so good that we're gonna make a tradition of it.
I'm no expert in Egyptian food but my Egyptian friend said this was the real deal. Even if you don't have an Egyptian friend with you, the staff is sooo friendly and they are so happy to help you order if you need help picking something. They even taught me some Arabic, if you want napkins you can ask for "Mandeel" 😅
I came in a group of 4 and we got to eat a bunch of different things. My favorite was the sausage feteer AKA soujouk (it's the one cut into squares in my 3 photos).
The hawawshi was great too, ask for the mayo with it (it's the one buried under the fries, it's filled with meat).
The plain feteer was a nice way to end it, we had it with the honey and molasses and it was like a giant dessert croissant haha.
Next time I come I really want to get the koshary, it looks so good. Prob a great pick if you don't have a large group to share all the other stuff.
Definitely come try this place!! I am so jealous of everyone who can eat here without having to...
Read moreThe owner is super rude and behaves like he is doing everyone a favour! His website says it’s open till 11:00 pm. I placed an order for a 9:00 pm pickup. He calls me up at 850 and says come now I close at 9. I requested him to wait 10-15 more minutes. He yells at me and says I’ll wait till 9:05 then I’ll lock. I reached at 9:08 and the pathetic person left. I was looking forward to it after missing my Iftaar. Unfortunately never coming back again. I’ll advise everyone to stay away. I lost 27 bucks today.
No paying customer deserves to be treated this way. The owner needs to learn some manners!
Edit after the response: your employee is lying to you. I told him I’m in the masjid and I’ll be there by 9:15. He refused to wait and was extremely rude. Your website was accepting orders for a 10:00 pm pickup too. So it was your fault and should have accommodated! He said come by 9:05. I was there by 9:08.
And I know it wasn’t an employee it was Adele himself. I have spoke to him a couple of times when I was at...
