Disappointed by Inconsistent Dog Policy and Treatment
I recently visited this cafĂ© with two friends and our three very well-trained dogsâtwo pets and one vested, actively working service dog. We were excited to enjoy some time together, but unfortunately, the experience left a sour taste in our mouths.
Right from the start, it was clear that dog behavior standards here are enforced inconsistently. We had to wait and enter through a different door because a Shih Tzu was sitting right at the main entrance. We didnât want to walk past it for safety reasons and simply didnât want to be near a dog whose owner wasnât paying attention. On a previous visit (without my dog), I witnessed a wiener dog roaming freely, sniffing every guest without any control from its owner or intervention from staff.
During this most recent visit, our dogs were calm, quiet, and tucked neatly under our table, completely out of the way. Despite this, employees began whispering and staring almost immediately. A short time later, someone who appeared to be the owner or manager asked us to move to a different area. We understood the request and respectfully obliged.
After weâd purchased food and drinks and settled in again, that same person returned to inform us that next time, only two dogs would be allowed at once, as âit makes people uncomfortable.â While I can understand setting a limit on pets, one of the dogs with us was a clearly vested service dogâclassified as medical equipment, not a petâso technically, we had only two pet dogs. All three were silent, focused on their handlers, and even received compliments from other patrons who appreciated how well-behaved they were.
Whatâs troubling is the clear double standard. On multiple occasions, Iâve seen small, out-of-control dogs allowed to roam the cafĂ©, bothering customers and even sitting close to the food bar. Yet when we bring in calm, highly trained large-breed dogsâtucked away under the table, and one of them workingâweâre scrutinized and restricted.
Businesses must be familiar with service dog laws and ensure their staff understand the difference between a pet and a working animal. Clear policies should be posted on the door and website to avoid confusion or unintentional discrimination.
Sadly, due to this inconsistency and the lack of support for service dog handlers, I no longer feel comfortable returning. My dog is a critical part of my health and safety, and I canât risk bringing him into an environment where out-of-control pets are overlooked while trained, well-behaved dogsâand service animalsâare...
Read moreThe front area is a cafe and the back area is a cocktail bar. There is plenty of seating in the back area and around the outside (Front and Side).
There are plenty of options with alcohol and non-alcohol based drinks, the baked goods are great and meals on the go. They occasionally hold BBQ events on the weekends. The kitchen is open earlier in the day for more prep based foods and then they shut it down later in night where they can reheat/retoast prepped foods like sandwiches and wings.
The cocktails and beers here are a great selection. If you give the servers creative reign, they never disappoint.
Pickle pizza was my favourite dish ("oh my god, this guy doesn't know anything about food!!!"). I have ingested more pizza than anyone reading this. Its good. Trust me.
Favourite cocktail is Purple Rain. Floral. A bit pricy but a treat once in a while.
They have local favourites on tap. They have the Port Credit beer on tap (I'm new here, forgot the name of the brewery). The IPA is delicious ("oh the hipster lookin dude likes IPAs big Surprise").
The staff, regular patrons and the owner are what makes this place. The bartenders are all spectacular; the cafe is run by kind staff, and the owner is always intimately involved in the operation. Personally, it's what brought me back --- in the locality where people don't even wave back, there is always a population of individuals jovially waiting to converse.
There is a range of demographics that come here. Its one of the more .... Neutral places to pop in to on your Port Credit trek.
I tend to grab a cold brew and go for a walk along the water.
Archtop is a safe space filled with great people and vibes. Thank you for being my go-to...
