I am writing this review in response to a review made by MIKE COOK. Because I also review food. I would advise “food critics” to first familiarize themselves with the cultural background of the food they intend to critique otherwise, it is irresponsible to speak publicly on how bad or good a dish is. For example, whenever I sample food that I don’t like I say, “I am not aware of how this is supposed to taste however; it’s not for me”……. Food is not necessarily bad simply because you don’t like it. I don’t like chicken pot pie 🥧 that does not make it bad.
I have been a customer of Charlie’s from the day they opened. Canada is multi cultural consequently, taste in cuisine vary. Some spices are an acquired taste, when tasting cuisine from other cultures. Even if you tasted a dish one way, another Caribbean island will present the dish differently, due to variances in spices that differ from island to island.
I cannot speak for Mike Cook’s taste but as a person from the Caribbean with experience in Caribbean spices, Charlie’s is Caribbean soul food. It’s my comfort food. In our neighbourhood we respond when visitors to the area misrepresent our community because; representation matters.
In closing, I am about to have my favourite wings from Charlie’s. I special ordered with “suicidal level spice” to suit my taste. Shout out to the cooks and the entire staff at Charlie’s Caribbean Restaurant. Micro aggressions is a real thing in communities where there are a lot of Black and...
Read moreThe only reason they get one star, was for the 8 fish cake. They were cold but good. The server had a stank attitude but I tried to look past that. I also bought a curry goat lunch special just to taste the food. I was shock that they literally gave me five pieces of mostly bone. Once I ate some. I was disgusted that half of the meat was cartilage. Wow. I blame the servers for their spiteful behavior. My husband felt they had a nasty attitude and wanted nothing else. They serve some of the food right by the cash depending on the dish. I've noticed everyone else had a decent amount of food. Ive worked in the kitchen for 10 yrs. The goat was dry. The rice was good. Coleslaw was fresh and flah flah. No vinegar or taste. I try to help to support my people but I wont support any business that lacks professionalism, courtesy and consistency. The second time I've been disappointed with Charlie's, no wait, the 3rd. 1st was at their grocery store where they sold me fake turpentine. The 2nd was the nearly empty roti I ordered through delivery. Never again. Tips to success, train your staff in quantity and customer service, keep it consistent. Having nearly good food is not enough to keep your doors open. You will be out of business off of attitude and greed alone if I and my crew open a restaurant right next door. You have lost a customer and I will spread the word of this ordeal. Be careful how you treat people because you dont know who they...
Read moreI'm not a regular of this restaurant. It's across the street from my barber and I often grab jerk chicken and fried rice there after a haircut. This is my first ever review of a business and I'm compelled to write this review so that service may be improved. First, the staff don't seem to know that they're operating a restaurant. I once ordered jerk chicken and fried rice take-away only to get home to find out that they forgot to add the chicken. I took it to be an innocuous mistake and gave them the benefit of the doubt. My second bad experience was ordering and paying for jerk chicken and fried rice but was served fried chicken instead. I discovered that at home and only ate the rice and threw out the chicken. Today, I ordered my favourite jerk chicken and fried rice and not only was the price higher (about $1.25) than I paid before, the young lady serving the food couldn't stop talking into the open food whilst placing the chicken on top of the rice. She also had an obnoxious disposition of referring to customers as "honey". I was grossed out and threw out the food afterwards. When I go to a restaurant, I expect to be served food instead of a mixture of food and saliva. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to know that I won't be patronising this restaurant any more. Their jerk chicken is great but the staff need serious training on restaurant etiquette and making sure that customers get what they order...
