Had a great experience at this restaurant when it comes to the food in particular. Turkish food has never disappointed me no matter which restaurant I’ve tried it in. I got the beef Doner which was a great choice. A bit on the higher end when it comes to price but it was definitely worth it. I love meat so the meat portion they gave was a generous amount. However, I wish they asked me whether I prefer rice or fries as my side as I would have preferred fries but they automatically assumed I wanted rice. Rice was plain white rice so nothing special and salad was a basic salad too but I did like it. In particular the meat was my favourite along with the sauce sides. However, my friends and I came for a birthday brunch around 1pm so we were surprised to see the the restaurant completely empty. They didn’t have much options when it came to brunch items/ breakfast items. I was going to get shakshuka at first but thankfully I read the description closely as shakshuka in my Egyptian culture is a completely different dish that consists of an egg dish in a tomato sauce simmered with fresh vegetables and onion and garlic and is served warm. I was glad that I read the menu closely before buying the shakshuka as it was under “Cold Appetizer” category and with a description mentioning that it’s an egg plant dish and I don’t even like egg plant so I was very thankful I didn’t get this dish. Instead the beef doner was a great choice that I was happy with. Most of my friends ended up getting a pide pizza which was the closest brunch item/ breakfast/lunch item to get. I was going to do the same but my sister had already gotten this so I decided the beef doner made more sense considering that I am a huge meat lover. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at the restaurant as well. I really liked that they allowed us to stay for as long as we wanted too as the restaurant was quiet at that time so it worked out to our advantage. My only other small concern that I was surprised by is when the bill came, I asked the waiter if I can pay by cash. Nothing was mentioned regarding whether it’s mandatory to tip or not so I figured I don’t have to tip considering my financial situation. My total for my sister’s plate and I was around $71 and I gave her $75. At first she asked if I wanted any change but then looked at my total and said this should be enough and never came back with any change. I assumed that she took the rest of the change as a tip but she hadn’t even asked me first if I am okay with tipping the change. I let it go since it was just a small amount but I definitely felt that from a customer service perspective, she should have asked me first at least rather than assume I don’t mind tipping the rest of the change. Other than that, I did have a great experience overall at this restaurant. Food was good, vibes were great and my friends and I all had a great time. I had been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time so I was glad to finally try it. Overall a place I would definitely recommend. One other thing that I noticed is that they don’t give tap water at this restaurant. They give a branded large water for the table to share then split price of the Waterbottles among everyone. $1 was charged per person so in other words that Waterbottle was around $10 which is a bit steep but at the same time, I preferred this method over the restaurants that make each person by their own individual water bottle for $2-$3 each. $1 per person was much more reasonable. Despite these small few hiccups that I encountered, I was very pleased overall and would definitely recommend this...
Read moreWent with our 10-person family today, my mother in law wanted to go to a nice restaurant with a nice atmosphere and good food. My sister in law recommended Mama Fatma.
First, it’s a great atmosphere to go for an occasion. They took the time to make the place Instagram ready when it comes to taking photos. The seating is also comfy and they don’t make you feel like you need to leave even though they gave people waiting to be seated.
They don’t take reservations on the weekend. So we decided to arrive early before the rush. And we are lucky to get a table for all 10 of us right away.
We started with mixed appetizers and sujook pide. We weren’t sure how many people it would feed, so we just got one of each. We had to order another mixed appetizer plate as it wasn’t enough. But it came quickly and we were happy about that! Overall, it was good! The pide was a bit small compared to some of the other places we have eaten at, but it was tasty.
Our server Emir was wonderful. He was polite, helpful, friendly and made great recommendations. I have dietary restrictions and was wondering if I should choose between the chicken doner or the lamb chops. He, after asking some questions said he could ask the chef to make the lamb chops with just salt and pepper and to leave off the seasoning for me so I wouldn’t be affected. I was so grateful for this recommendation. It was a very large portion and the lamb chops were trendy and still quite tasty. The salad and rice that accompanied it were quite yummy as well.
Throughout the entire dinner, Emir was attentive (even though the restaurant was filling up quickly). He got to us quickly and continued to be helpful and friendly.
For the rest of the family, we got the family mix platter. The description said it was for 4 people but it fed 8 people. We don’t eat huge portions, so we didn’t have to order more food. We just ordered extra Turkish bread that was made fresh in-house. Everyone appreciated the food. None of the offerings were dry. Everything was seasoned well and moist - not overcooked at all! Even our picky eaters were happy to take seconds. We had a little bit left over which we packed up for the kids to have for lunch tomorrow.
For dessert, we ordered some eclairs and profiteroles. Both were quite yummy. We got the kanafe. Both hubby and I felt like it needed more of the sugar syrup. The kids wanted the tres leches cake and enjoyed it thoroughly. The americano coffee was enjoyed. But the highlight of dessert was the Turkish coffee served with a Turkish delight and a water chaser!
I also want to note that the bussing staff was very efficient. They cleaned our table in between courses removing not just the plates and platters but also any debris and food that had fallen on the table. All with a smile!
Overall it was a good experience and the family really enjoyed being and eating at Mama Fatma’s. My in-laws want to go back again!
A few things to note: this restaurant is a bit more expensive than the usual Turkish restaurant. You are not just paying for food, but for atmosphere and really great customer service. Also, this is a mix of authentic Turkish cuisine like we ate in Turkey but also fusion cuisine. It’s a good mix...
Read moreFinally managed to try the new location of Mama Fatma. I have previously been to Mama Fatma in Vaughan, but many years ago. I remember the experience being quite memorable at the time and the food being good too so was excited to try the new Mississauga location. It's always packed whenever I pass by so never got it till now, and even then, we had to wait an hour to get a table. The long wait times is quite inconvenient, especially since they don't take reservations (from what I found when trying to do a booking online). I'd prefer if they find a better way to manage the long lineups, since seating is limited (seating for when you're looking for a table) and the long wait times can be quite annoying if you're on a time crunch.
The location is absolutely beautiful, and a great option if you're looking for a fancy dinner out for a special occasion or a date night. We went to celebrate a milestone birthday (60). Though the food is on the pricier end, the food is delicious and the wait time to get the appetizers and the mains were not as long as I had expected, given the crowd.
There's a lot of menu items to choose from, ranging from Turkish dishes to pasta, to seafood and more. We opted for the Mama Fatma kebab with nuts (36.99) which I found quite high for the price, since it was a single meat skewer (though quite fat and big, and ok to share, if sharing other dishes too). The other thing to note is that the amount of pistachio added to the kebab was not as generous, compared to other Turkish restaurants. However, the dish was flavorful and delicious, served hot.
Food is not served all at the same time, but rather when it's ready, which is annoying as it comes in batches and when sharing, which can be a bit annoying, but that's OK. The second dish we got was the chicken tava ($27.99), which was a more generous portion despite being the tava for 1. The bread and rice that came with it was delicious. The bread was served hot and super fresh.
We also loved the appetizer, the sigara boregi (turkish cheese sticks). I was expecting it to be more cheesy (the kind where you can see the cheese pull), but it was made mostly with feta and served with a side of sweet and sour chili sauce, which paired well. It was delicious regardless. For dessert, we tried the tres leche as recommended by the server. It is actually one of my favourite desserts, but I found it a little sweet though it was good.
We were served complimentary Turkish tea to complete our meal and the homemade ayran ($4.99) was also quite good!
I'd love to try more dishes on the menu and more desserts. Overall, the ambiance is great, the restaurant is beautiful and the food, as good as I remember the first time. We had a wonderful time and the server (I think his name is Bari or Baris) we had was also very nice, professional, friendly and smiling. A rare sight at Turkish restaurants in the GTA.
I get they were super busy which is why they couldn't meet some of our requests (such as requesting for a glass), but overall I'd recommend Mama Fatma, despite the...
