I absolutely love Curry Beef Puffs! I used to visit a cafe on Spadina Ave (downtown) called Furama Bakery for almost 30 years because they offered excellent curry beef pastries. However, like many other smaller restaurants, this cafe sadly succumbed to closure during the pandemic times.
Recently I developed a craving for these puffs and although I searched on Google I could not find a nearby location but my niece came to my rescue and mentioned that there is a place called Papa John's Bakery in Mississauga which made these puffs among other baked goods. She also said: "Heads up! You have to get there early because they always ran out of the puffs by 11am."
Needless to say I took a trip this morning and arrived at Papa John's by 8am. Can you imagine my disappointment when I was informed that they had stopped making curry beef puffs at this time but would probably continue in the near future! I happened to be speaking with the owner Karon and he offered me a free sample of a curry beef bun. Suffice to say it was delicious, albeit I was really looking forward to a curry beef Puff. However, as luck would have it, Karon noticed my disappointment and immediately offered to make me a 'special order' of the puffs but it would be ready in a couple of days. I was overjoyed to hear this and that just about made my day. How often do you visit a business where the rules are bent just for you? That's the great thing about small businesses such as Papa John's, where there are no 'store policies'. I can't wait to try my curry beef puff, thank you very much Karon! I daresay that Karon may indeed find an increase in 'special orders' for curry beef puffs after this Google review goes online.
Noteworthy: Papa John's menu is extensive and includes a large selection of 'Noodle In Soup' served with toast as well as the 'Rice' dishes, from Japanese curry to Taiwanese pork chops or beef briskets. Fried Chicken or Sausage also seems to be a popular specialty. Besides the 'All Day Breakfast', Papa John's also carries a wide variety of buns and sandwiches. All food items including their cakes (the Coffee Cream Cake is scrumptious!) are baked right on the premises and are fresh as any baked goods that mother...
Read moreToday Sep 20 2025 we came here again for early lunch, 11:00AM. We ordered tomatoes sauce Ox tongue rice and curry beef brisket rice. See picture as reference. In terms of the food, do not expect it to be like the Hong Kong style dishes at Richmond Hill or Markham areas. And I think it's only fair to taste and rate the product. As such reduced a star on the food, meaning its not upto my taste. However in my opinion do not go to a restaurant on a busy day. I'm sure they had a very busy morning already.
I came in today, Mar 14, 2025, morning 09:45hrs not busy at all. Again, I ordered brunch kind of dishes, "D10" Macaroni with spicy pork cubes in soup plus a large Hong Kong tea. (See attached photo) Totals to $16 and change. I immediately noticed the difference in price compared to previously when I first entered the below comments. Don't get me the wrong. Service-wise, it is still the same great service,.. same owners nice personality. The food is great. The only thing is jamed packed on weekends like I mentioned previously below, and that was 7 years ago and worse now. (The below was my input 7 years ago) Very busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings, crowded. Very friendly staff, though. It's a place that serves quick combo b'fast, light lunches, and a very Honkong style atmosphere with many different varieties. Honkong style bread freshly baked right here. People tend to gather and love to enjoy their family b'fast or brunch time here, very friendly orienteering place with just about...
Read moreI ordered a cake for my dad’s 60th birthday during the pandemic from Papa John’s Bakery, wanting to support local based on a recommendation, but sadly my experience was not great. I wanted a traditional Asian fruit cake but what I got was a low quality cake that barely resembled what we normally get from the fresh bakeries or Asian grocers. I went in to pick up and there was a bit of a line but saw three or so cakes near the bottom of the glass display. I thought great, cake looks nice, but was disappointed when they pulled a different cake from the glass display that was behind all the nice cakes. They had a random assortment of fruit on the cake that included fig(?!) and a chunk of chocolate (the writing on the cake was also incorrect). There was nothing decorative about this cake and it barely had any canned fruit in the middle of the cake, it was just a lot of cream. The ones on display that they had prepared likely for other customers were presented nicely and had a bit more of a resemblance to the cakes our family is used to buying so I’m not sure what why mine was different. Also keep in mind that they will charge you extra if you want fresh fruit and not canned in the center. Perhaps I will give their other menu items a try in the future but the lack of care put into the cake that we got, which was of lower quality and higher priced than other bakeries or the grocery store, has prevented me...
