This is small family-owned restaurant specializing in cuisine based on the Xinjian region, the Uyghurs. Since Uyghurs are predominantly Muslim, all the foods are halal. When it comes to Xinjian cuisine the only other place where that was available was in downtown Toronto. So it’s nice to have one nearby. In terms of food, we liked what we ate and was satisfied overall. We went out for dine in with my family and the setting was nice and cozy. I will list the items we had ordered and will try to give my honest opinion about them.
Manta: Beef dumpling which are steamed. Each order comes with 6 pieces of the dumpling, accompanied by soy sauce-vinegar based chilli oil. Each dumplings were considerable in size and, unless shared by another person (which I did), would be enough for a person. The beef filling on the dumpling seemed slightly dry but that can be compensated if you dip it on the chilli oil. Overall a 3.5/5 dish.
Lamb kebab: lamb kebab that is lightly spiced. Once you bite into it you can taste the cumin, which we liked. The kebab meat was however, a bit chewy, something which my wife pointed out, but wasn’t an issue for me. The meat itself wasn’t too tough to chew though. You do need to order a side (either a naan bread or rice). Each order comes with 4 skewers and each skewer would contain 5-6 bite sized meat cubes. Overall a 4/5 dish.
Polov rice (minus the roast lamb): we intially had asked for plain rice to complement the lamb kebab we ordered, but the restaurant were out of plain rice and gave us the polov rice instead, minus the lamb roast that usually accompanies this dish. The rice itself was very flavourful but was slightly dry. Overall 3.5/5.
Special Uyghur pasta: This is a beef udon noodles dish topped with chillies, vegetables and sesame seeds. The noodles was spicy and had good flavours. However, the noodle itself was a but chewy and seemed like it needed to be steamed/ stir-fried a bit more. However, in terms of the flavour and presentation it’s a 3/5 dish.
Cucumber salad: This was the initial appetizer that we had ordered. the salad was dressed with the same chilli-vinegar oil that came with Manta (beef dumpling), topped with sesame seeds. A perfect dish to open you palate with. Overall a 5/5 dish.
All dishes ordered cost approximately CAD 68 excluding tips. It’s worth a visit if are craving halal Xinijian food and don’t want to go through the hassle to drive up all the...
Read moreSeeing so many good reviews here not sure if the delivery is just not the same quality. If so that would raise another concern. This is the worst ever delivery I ever gotten. I am trying to pick among all the dishes which one is not as bad. This is definitely not restaurant quality, I think anyone could make it better at home.
The manta was hard a rock, having trouble to bite it, I am sure the one had before at other restaurant is not like this.
There was a cold dish we ordered, entire dish just extremely sour. I am not sure if this is how it suppose to taste like, not like vinegar sour. The worst dish is sautéed tripe with pepper sauce. To be honest I don’t think the tripe is well cleaned otherwise the smell would not be as strong. I had all kinds of dishes with tripes before, I can stand the smell, but this one I couldn’t after I gave some many try. What is even worse is that they DID NOT PUT ANY SALT, I am 100% it was forgotten. It’s not light taste, just no taste, oh with the original tripe taste.
Kebab should be the speciality as it’s a Utghur restaurant. However I can say the taste was okay but half of the meat get wasted. Extremely hard to bite and more than half was just waste.
Polov and Uyghur chicken was okay compare to the other one, but just in comparison with all the other bad ones. Plus the potato in chicken dish was not even well peeled. I can still see skins...
We ordered some dishes which noted would have free side dishes and yogurt. We did NOT see any of them. No one called us to explain anything as well. Even a call just saying they won’t be available would not make us as mad.
I don’t think I would ever want to waste another over 100 dollars to give another try. I think we picked enough varieties on the menu, nothing came back to be acceptable.
If the taste was bad, I might just let it go sometimes but even the customer services is bad, as I can see clearly on the receipt they had the free dishes noted beside, but they just skipped it.
I am extremely disappointed, had high hope with the restaurant and not trying to give anyone hard time during pandemic. But I think if anyone sees this, should avoid so you can support other local...
Read moreDropped by around 9pm as a pass-by. We only wanted something small and so we ordered the samsas and spicy jelly bean/cold jelly bean.
The menu seems to have changed compared to the ones that can be found online as if you want to buy a samsa or kebabs, you aren’t able to order individually anymore, but would have to get as a portion of 4. As we didn’t have a large appetite, we asked if we could just get a small or single portion and the boss said we were able to get 2 instead of 4 for the price divided by 2. Also as the boss was talking to staff in the kitchen it turned out they didn’t have anymore ready made cold jelly and if they were to make it would take too long (and it was already quite late).
As an apology, the boss gave us a complimentary item. The overall experience was very pleasant and the samsa was delicious!!!! The lamb was super juicy and tender. I loved that there was a piece of lamb fat inside to balance out the lean to fat and the flavor is just very nostalgic to lamb kebabs I’ve had in China as there’d be at least one piece of lamb fat on there. (Though of course this is the samsa instead). I would definitely go again and try more...
