Based on the Discover Montréal YouTube video from September 28th 2021, I made the drive with my wife and daughter to visit and sample their wares on Sunday, October 10th 2021. It was 4 hours before closing, and already they had very little food left to sell. I asked one of the kitchen workers if there was more coming out soon and he said no, that it was more a factor of not being able to get some of the ingredients to make the desserts. Okay, they still had a few pieces of Babka left so we bought a few as well as a cookie and a small, cold cheese filled pastry I didn't get the name of.

To be clear, the food was all very delicious, so that was fine. I'm leaving out 3 stars though, because the woman who served us was the absolute worst counter person I've been served by in years. She had zero interest in having to answer any questions whatsoever and just rudely acted like our being there to buy their food was wasting her precious time. She behaved as if she didn't even want to be there. She was like this with the 2 customers that were there before us as well as the one after us, so it wasn't personal, it's just the way she is to everyone. I don't care how good any food is. Nothing will make me stay away forever faster than a horrible front line employee who acts like she is somehow doing us a favour. There were 3 women at the front, the rude one was the tallest one.

To the owner of Cheskie: Get rid of her before she gets rid of more of your...

Best bakery in Montreal

Let me specify.

The donuts and the babka.

The donuts: For my personal taste, simplicity is best. Which seems like an easy obstacle to overcome, but this isn't the case.

Most donut shops produce a donut that is too oily, to sweet, not crispy, too much of a cake texture.

This is not the case for the cheskie chocolate donut. It makes me think of the New York classic chocolate glaze donut.

Simple, crispy exterior, soft and gooey interior the perfect blend. The chocolate glaze actually tastes like chocolate. And the thickness of the glaze is sufficient.

The babka A unique and tasty treat. I read some of the other reviews here indicating the sweetness. It's a fact. They are very sweet, rich, dense, and delicious.

I brought the babka to my Christmas dinner and they were a hit, and you don't need so much to quench that sweet tooth. So yeah technically very sweet, but you just can't or shouldn't eat too much of it.

Anyway, taste...

Beware with Pre Orders! I used to love Cheskie's, but it has now been tarnished in full in my eyes. I was visiting Montreal and had pre-ordered 24 Russian Chocolate Babkas one week prior for pick-up on Sun Apr 21. I waited the long line-up and when it was my turn, told them that I was there to pick up my order. They all looked at each other, not seeing any pre-orders waiting. After a few minutes one of the staff members brought out an orange paper with my order on it, and the owner said that she didn't see it. They don't have it, and have no Russian Chocolate Babkas to sell. I walked out with NOTHING. Absolutely NOTHING. Horrible customer experience and I will never set foot into Cheskie's ever again. Thankfully the IGA in Cote-St-Luc had an amazing selection of Chocolate Babkas and they are DELICIOUS - from "Reismans". Cheskie's, this is your loss and I will never vouch for you...

A MUST see location for any visitors to Montreal...Cheskie's is a renown Jewish "Heimishe" bakery with awesome sweetened pasteries and breads (like the beautiful egg-based twisted challah loaf). Given the choices, I highly recommend the CHOCOLATE BABKAH...you will not be disappointed. Yum, Yum and Yum again (until you realize that it is probably 1000 calories per ...but still Yum!) NOTE: The bakery is observant of all Jewsih holidays and weekly shabat schedule. Therefore it closes at sundown on Friday, is closed throughout Saturday and only opens on Sunday...so guide yourself accordingly. Further, expect line ups on Friday afternoon but it moves relatively quickly (max wait is probably 15 minutes even with the line up extending to the corner of Parc).

Sure, you might feel your wallet flinch a little, but consider it the modest toll for crossing into pastry paradise. Cheskie’s isn’t just a bakery—it’s a sweet little institution tucked into one of Montreal’s most charming neighborhoods. Step inside, and you’re greeted by the warm, yeasty perfume of freshly baked wonders stacked high behind glass. The selection alone could tempt the most resolute minimalist to walk out with a paper bag stuffed to bursting. Yes, it’s a bit on the pricey side—but when every bite tastes like the golden standard of quality, it feels like money well spent. Whether you’re after a perfectly braided challah or a slice of their legendary babka, Cheskie’s makes it clear: excellence comes at a small, delicious premium.

Found this lovely little bakery while walking around Mile End. There was a line but the staff was very friendly and efficient, they also answered all my questions and helped me decide between the choices. The place smells like fresh bread and sunshine, with cute display of cookies, pastries, cupcakes and breads. I bought chocolate hazelnut bars (to die for. crunchy, chocolate-y like a cross between Kit Kat and Ferrero Rocher), potato knishes (a little mild for me but lots of stuffing and good size) and the newyork style black white cookies (authentic taste, giant size). Definitely visit if you’re in the area it’s a hidden gem
