I will preface this with saying that I do not enjoy fruity coffees, so I cannot judge the coffee too harshly based on my personal preferences.
However, I have had it a few times to give it a test, but the shots are usually a little sour which puts me off even more from ordering the espresso-based drinks. The tea-based drinks are soft and warm and deliciously made.
As for the food, the cheese and pizza scones are my favourite. Enough savoury flavour with the tinge of sweet dough is perfect! The blueberry and chocolate one is sometimes a little too sweet for me, but it depends on the day! The apple scone is WAY too sweet for me, but very reminiscent of apple pie with the tinge of cinnamon, if that is your thing! They did have a new scone that I knew I would not enjoy so I did not attempt to taste it: cherry and white chocolate (I think?). The chocolatines they sell are also great! A good nutty flavour - wonderful choice for the cafe!
I actually wanted to write this review as I just had the pleasure of meeting the owner of both cafes with the name. The owner is kind and gentle and willing to take the time out to explain what is in the scones ingredients wise! We had a sweet chat about how loud it can get sometimes, especially now since convocation at McGill is happening, and I was told the other cafe is usually quieter, so I am excited to go down there some time!
From the conversation with the owner, I can tell you that they are not money-grabbing. Downtown is expensive, and there is little owners of establishments can do but raise their prices slightly to catch up with the cost of living for them as well. Life is hard, capitalism is harder, but the people at Humble Lion are...
Read moreBy Zeus, what a café! With décor to do Aphrodite proud and consumable goods as grand as a banquet of nectar and ambrosia, fortune is surely the right of this establishment! I must, however, warn you of the plague cast upon your coffee lids by what is undoubtedly a great daemon. Following my order of one coffee to go, I had to walk several blocks to the location of consumption. With each step, a drip did fall from my cup as I struggled to carry the container with reasonable stability as my hand became consumed by the mucilaginous waste excreted from the cup, burning me and making me out to be a fool for all to see. Praise the Gods I contracted no enemies along the way, for my path was made visible by the trail left behind me by your blend of bitter beans to the eyes of any barbarian wishing to slit my throat where I sleep. I dare even to say that, given one of your coffees upon entry, a man entirely deficient of virtue could find his way out of a labyrinth! Given that the function of the lid is to keep the liquid inside the container rather than outside of it, you must surely agree that such a lid is bad. My coffee may have...
Read moreVery disappointed! I was one of Humble Lion's first customers when they opened many years ago on Sherbrooke Street. I encouraged friends and colleagues to become regulars because the coffee was the best, the place was cute and the staff was savvy, warm, friendly and professional. I'm afraid that is no longer the case and it makes me very sad. I have not been there for many months and when I arrived today I noticed that there were way too many folks behind the counter: 6. They were all chatting and joking not a word or a smile for the customers. One good tip: If it was going to take a long time to get an order then at least smile and say: "we will be with you shortly" or something like that. The quality of the coffee is terrible! Nothing like it used to be. Over priced and not good! To top it all, the place was a mess, odd with so much staff behind the counter. The garbage was full, the floor dirty and the counters filled with spilled coffee, sugar, dirty napkins. I am sorry to say but I will not be going there ever again. Too bad! I really do hope the owner stops in now and then and tries to improve what used to be my...
