So the worst thing about traveling is falling in love with food that isn't attainable on the regular. Such is my life after visiting La Binerie which is a whopping 5.5 to 6 hour drive across international borders.
I love (and I mean LOVE) this place. Traditional Canadian comfort food. The Toutiere pie is the best I have had. I am from Maine and I am familiar with the pie having mashed in it. But having it on the side was actually a game changer. Incredible! Chef's Kiss The crust was buttery and flakey. The meat was seasoned perfectly. The mashed potatoes were on point and flavorful. I even enjoyed the steamed veggies.
The poutine was nice with an incredible gravy. I even scraped the bowl to drizzle that gravy on my taters but didn't end up wanting to because they were so good alone. So I just drank the gravy from the spoon instead haha! No shame.
Also, my whole family really loved the pea soup. It was so warm and robust. It could have been all we ate, as it was so filling. I imagine if I lived there in the fall or winter it would be a staple in our take-out rotation for a cozy meal at home. I am sure it hits different and EVEN better during like December or January. It's so yummy. Our server was so kind and even offered us some bread and butter to enjoy with our soup.
If you're looking for a wonderful comfort traditional Canadian meal look no further. If you only had 24 hours in Montreal and could only eat at one spot for dinner, this would be it. I promise you wouldn't be disappointed. I found them on Uber last night but they were already closed or I would have been having a late night treat!
The restaurant is cozy, nothing special or crazy but I wasn't there for decor or ambiance. The waiter (also the owner's son) was hands down the best server we have had in a very very long time (in a post-COVID world). Patient, kind, humble, friendly. I felt like I was at a relatives for a nice meal. Amazing service. He was just the sweetest guy!
My ONLY complaint is that they don't ship on Gold Belly and I didn't have a cooler with me. I would Have gladly come home with a few pies and some soup for my freezer. I am going to be thinking about this and craving it super bad for a...
Read moreEvery town needs a good place like La Binerie; a small hole in the wall that's been around for nearly a century making quality food the entire time. Walking in feels like a visit to a grandparents home, in the best way possible. You immediately feel at home, ready to kick off your boots and hang your coat. Staff is unbelievably friendly after what can only be years upon years of humble success. Let's not beat around the bush though: this is the best tourtiere I've had ever. Period. The crust was flaky, and moist. It didn't leave that dry finish in your mouth like so many pie crusts do. But that didn't compromise the bottom as it remained the perfect level of crisp to accompany the filling. The filling also being a perfect balance of seasoning and spices, lacking for nothing as it's very likely the recipe was perfected and unchanged from decades past. They offer lots of take-home items (none of which I was able to purchase). Food is served quick and hot, with my biggest point of contention being the baked beans. These were undeniably the best beans in regards to texture and doneness. And while seasoned well enough, for me, these were screaming for one additional hit of flavour to elevate these to the next level. Whether it had been a tangy hit of tomato, or a sweet drizzle of maple, they felt so close to being perfect. I recommend purchasing them to take home and perhaps dabble in mixing flavours as you'd be hard pressed to not find your...
Read moreI'm sharing a moment that happened to my mother and I at this establishment when I was 5. I'm 45 now, to this day I will never forget the abhorrent way we were treated there. This is the only way I know to forgive you. Is to let the world know how evil you acted. It was clear after 10 minutes we we're not welcome. This difficulty we had in getting the attention of wait staff was a red flag. When we tried to order, we were told those items were sold out. It was obviously a lie because people who came after us were eating what we tried to order. So we stayed 30 minutes, enduring this disgusting behavior. I don't think my mom understood. Imagine I'm 5 years old, I remember telling my mom they don't want us here we have to go. To do this to an immigrant with a child is never acceptable. I remember explaining to my mom it's because we are not white and we speak English we are not welcome. The trauma has been done and it's lasted 40 years. Ideally your business should be closed down and labeled as racist. But I'm not here to condemn. I will never receive and apology from the people who treated us poorly. So what I want to do if forgive you. This is the only way I can let it go. I understand management has changed. But your legacy is tainted. If your reading this review I recommend you think twice about giving your money to people with a racist history that's never been acknowledged. I forgive you but I will...
