We dined here on Saturday April 27, 2024 around 6PM. Had made a reservation since the website strongly suggested this. The restaurant is small and fills up fast.
Located in the heart of Old Port, this small joint offers a simple menu of bbq meats and sides. There is only beef ribs, porc ribs, pulled pork, brisket and smoked chicken, served with your choice of mac and cheese, coleslaw and baked beans.
There are no appetizers and no deserts - however there is a cocktail and drinks menu. I do find it odd that the food menu is not posted on the website, nor on their social media. I saw some outdated photos of the menu other customers posted. The only place to see a physical menu is on the outside of the restaurant itself, otherwise once seated, there is nothing printed and the server will be the one to talk through the options.
My partner and I opted for the beef ribs (there is an extra $7 for this option), pork ribs and smoked chicken. The meats were all very tender but lacked flavor - as if there was not enough seasonong or sauce. We had sides of mac and cheese and coleslaw. The food was very good, but not amazind and expensive for around $40 a person to start with plus the surchage for beef ribs. Cocktails were around $17. Very pricy dinner, for this, I expected larger portions, I found the Texas bbq experience to be lacking despite the website claiming this is Texas style. They surely do not serve American sized portions. I am a slim female with a healthy appetite and was disappointed in the lack of food, especially for the sides. There are maybe 3 or 4 bites of coleslaw or mac and cheese in each serving, yet these are the cheapest foods I don't understand why they couldn't be more generous.
The time it took to prepare the food and serve us was also puzzling. We arrived when the restaurant just opened and were among the first to order yet waited probably a good half hour or more before our food arrived. The meats are all cooked in advance and I suspect the sides were as well - as we overheard a server mentioning the food is smoked in St-Eustache which is North, outside the island of Montreal. There are no smokers on site at this restaurant.
I am glad I tried this place as there is a shortage of great BBQ within Montreal - however due to the portion size, slow service, price and location I would not come back. Unfortunately there is no parking nearby so be ready to pay upwards of $25-$30 for a paid parking lot, or take public...
Read moreAmerican tourist from Boston who’s first time visiting Montreal I stumbled across the city’s most incredible barbecue (maybe even Canada’s best). Firstly, I have eaten far more barbecue than the average person. Having spent 3 months in Memphis (eating barbecue at least 3 times a week) and making countless pilgrimages to Texas, St Louis, Kansas City and the Carolinas, I have consumed some of the greatest barbecue the United States has to offer. Lattuca Barbecue is right up there with the best barbecue America. In fact, I would go as far as saying the barbecue here easily falls into the top 5 I have ever eaten.
This small batch Texas-style barbecue was moist, flavorful, and tender fall-off-the-bone. Everything you look for in barbecue. The marinade and sauce used are to absolutely die for. I ordered the beef rib, brisket, pulled pork, and chicken. It came with 3 sides: smoked bbq beans, coleslaw, and macaroni and cheese. Not only were the meats right on par with American barbecue but my wife and I agree the beans and coleslaw were better than anything we have eaten in America. And our son housed all 4 sides of Mac and cheese we ordered.
FYI: This isn’t some commercial or chain establishment. You are getting quality meats cooked with tender loving care using only the most quality ingredients the owner can find. Each meat is treated with care and hand cut by John for all to see. The menu changes nightly and isn’t available online. When I called the owner and pitmaster answered. John could not have been more friendly and pleasant. He truly cares about his craft but more importantly the people he meets along the way. I even called later that evening to compliment the food and service. Although he couldn’t come to the phone because the placed was jam packed, he took the time to follow up the next day through text message just to thank me.
Reservations are easy to make online. My only recommendations are to make sure you reserve a table and do not miss your opportunity to eat some the best barbecue North America...
Read moreI am writing this review based on a couple separate experiences (friends, family and personal) Although the servers were friendly and the meat was well cooked, there were a few issues with our experience. The portions were wildly inconsistent, while the first plate was only brisket, the second time I had ordered brisket AND pork rib (and paid an extra fee for the second choice of meat- not a problem as it was only 2$). However, in comparison to the first experience, I received maybe a third of the amount of brisket, and two pork ribs. After polishing off my meal, I was still hungry, and I am far from a big eater! Maybe the 2$ is a charge for adding an extra meat option to your meal, rather than adding additional meat onto the plate. The sides were served only half-full (again this falls with the portioning issue). In comparison to some of the pictures shown, it looks as if our plates were half-eaten upon being served. Additionally the Mac and Cheese was cold :( My partner pointed the portion size/cold mac and cheese out to the waitress and she said that she had had a bad day/week and was tired. I completely understand, as I have customer service experience myself, but I was disappointed by the meal given how much we paid to dine at Lattuca’s (almost 100$ for 2 plates, a beer, and tip of course). Our friends who went in on a different occasion unfortunately had a similar experience. Never getting a first approach, or having the menu explained to them (there is no physical menu), and other tables waiting twice as long. In this confusion they also had another table’s food delivered to them without even ordering, and the waitress leaving before being able to fix the mistake. In short: I visited Lattuca’s barbecue because of all of the excitement around the name, and its appearance in food blogs. Despite the poor reviews of my friends I was willing to give it a try, but I will unfortunately not be returning. The prices were too high, and the portions...
