The Grand Quay of the Port of Montreal is a remarkable waterfront destination that combines maritime heritage with modern urban design. Situated on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Old Montreal, it is both a functioning cruise terminal and a vibrant public gathering place. This space was once part of the city’s industrial port infrastructure, but over the years it has been reimagined as a cultural and recreational hub that welcomes locals, tourists, and international travelers arriving by sea.
One of the most striking features of the Grand Quay is the Promenade d’Iberville, an elevated green roof that stretches nearly 600 meters. This unique walkway offers panoramic views of Old Montreal, the river, and the city skyline. Lined with greenery, benches, and open areas, it provides a peaceful retreat where visitors can walk, cycle, or simply enjoy the scenery. It is also an important step toward sustainable urban planning, turning a formerly industrial zone into an accessible and eco-friendly public space.
Another highlight is the Port Centre, an interactive space dedicated to the history of Montreal’s port. Visitors can explore exhibits on maritime trade, shipping, and the port’s vital role in shaping the city’s economic and cultural identity. The Grand Quay also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including cultural festivals, holiday markets, and family activities, making it a lively destination in every season.
Architecturally, the Grand Quay blends modern glass structures with heritage-inspired elements, reflecting Montreal’s balance of tradition and innovation. Beyond being a cruise terminal, it has become a symbol of the city’s openness to the world and its connection to the river. Today, the Grand Quay stands as a welcoming gateway to Montreal, offering discovery, leisure, and a renewed appreciation for the city’s...

A cab driver was picking us up at the terminal & we were worried about having to carry all of our luggage by ourselves. My mother is 83. Two very nice guys helped us with our luggage & walked us up & down the street trying to help us find our driver. The Port Authority manager Pasquale saw that we were distressed & having a difficult time. He stopped & helped us. He figured out that the cab driver was actually at the airport instead of the terminal where the ship docks after the driver was describing that he was by the rental car area. There are not any rental cars where the ship docks. The driver made it to pick us up about 20 minutes later. Crisis averted! ...
Read moreLeft late, waiting for more guests. Poorly managed and trained food staff. I'm not sure our young server had any instruction at all. Waited for 40 minutes for a beer and coffee. Many other frustrated guests with the same service at tables around us. Decent food when it did arrive. Appy's. My 2nd beer never came. The ,"Sights" we're of industrial harbour, which went on for miles. Nothing noteworthy to see here folks! The commentator maybe spoke for 15 minutes total in both French and English -- I think mostly because there was not much for landmarks on this part of the river. Would not...
