I came to eat here with very high expectations, as we were expected to wait 40 minutes to get the order. The cashiers and staff were not very welcoming, which is understandable since they were pretty busy but a little kindness would come a long way for customer service:) But now I will give some impressions of the food that I ordered:
Fried rice with Beef: NEVER ORDER THIS! The reason is that with fried rice, leftover rice should be used. But the RICE they used was OUTDATED, since I left some leftover to eat for breakfast the next day and was shocked to find out that it had became STRINGY. This means that the leftover rice used had developed a BACTERIA that had slightly fermented the rice. THIS IS A HEALTH HAZARD AS IT COULD CAUSE FOOD POISONING, as overnight leftover rice would still be edible the next day... The flavor was okay, and the beef was also quite dry.
Chicken pad Thai: The portion is quite large, but was served with a lemon instead of a lime, which is non-traditional. The flavor was a nice balance between sweet, sour, salty and probably the best from some other Thai restaurants in Montreal. The chicken was quite dry and mushy, maybe due to using precooked chicken or not cooking the chicken properly for tenderness.
Squid with salt and pepper: Flavor is quite nice, as there is a hint of smokiness from the Wok Hei and a nice saltiness and umami flavor from the salt and squid. It was also stir fried with cabbage, broccoli and carrot which was nice when soak in the sauce in the dish. The squid is frozen, which is expected since fresh squid access is hard here in Montreal.
Duck with Thai curry sauce with pineapple: This dish is also quite nice, as there is good body to the dish as they use coconut milk and sweetness from the pineapple. Although, for a price dish a little more duck would be appreciated, as it was mostly filled with bell pepper and pineapple.
But in conclusion, even though other than the rice dish every other dish was pretty good. I won't be ordering from this place since I am concerned about the quality of the ingredients, which is a shame as the flavors are pretty good. By no means I'm trying to hurt the business, but I wish they would be able to read my comment and improve on their...
Read moreKnowing the place since 2003 when I arrived in montreal, Have to say without a doubt, this is the best Thai restaurant in montreal. Mama still cooks in the kitchen and you see how efficient she is, the food is so authentic and melts in your mouth.
Just went back this week since their reopening, and having read so many reviews about the bad customer service, I could understand why. They have way too many orders to handle with 2 cooks in the kitchen and 1 person packing and receiving the order. Probably need one more person to help with order, this will resolve the customer service issue.
The casher at front who packs the order seems to be the daughter of the owners and she kept saying 'you need to wait 10-15 minutes' no matter what you ask. She indeed turned away at least 2-3 customers who wanted to ask her for something.
They now have an option to place orders electronically and pay by card which is convenient. The only thing is that this electronic method of placing order does not give you an option to select 'how spicy you want your dish'. And the fact that there's more than 100 options in the menu, this electronic option does not seem to display them all.
Overall the food is still amazing as it used to be, but lacking service and speed comes from lacking labor. Hope they can find someone to help them out to improve their...
Read moreAfter 30 or so years of being a client, following them as they moved from kiosk in a food court, to 2 different restaurants, then back to the Faubourg food court and despite the pandemic, I give up.
It's the best Thai cooking in town, but I can't get over their lack of interest in providing basic information.
Signs say 1) it's closed for an unlimited time, while another sign (2) says you can still order through Uber Eats for pickup with a 20 minute delay. The 'will return' clock (sign 3) says 6 PM. I asked for clarification and got told to either pay cash or if no cash, order through the Uber Eats app. I came up with enough cash and asked for a menu because none are posted and was told to look on Uber Eats, and that even if I had cash that I couldn't order because they were only doing Uber Eats orders. They could not even offer a physical menu that I know they have, or try to be of any more help. Please note that the employee spoke perfectly, there was no language barrier.
Goodbye Mama Bangkok. I will miss your cooking, but not the anti-business, confusing and rude service. I wish you luck in your exclusive Uber...
