We visited Ol’ Sweet after hearing mixed reviews about the shop, both good and bad, and decided to experience it for ourselves. Right from the start, the staff made a great impression. They were incredibly welcoming and attentive, asking if it was our first time. They took the time to explain how things work, guiding us through the menu and helping us choose the perfect cone cake based on our preferences.
The atmosphere in the shop is quite simple. There’s nothing overly fancy about the décor, but everything was clean and neat. There’s a small bar where you can sit, as well as a table with chairs by the windows, which gives the place a cozy, laid-back vibe. One thing that stood out was some of the reviews I’d read, where people complained about not having access to the restroom. Honestly, I’m on the shop’s side with this. They explained in several responses that the preparation area is close to the bathroom, and based on my own work experience, people don’t always respect hygiene standards. Many leave restrooms in an unpleasant state, which can be a nightmare for businesses, especially when food is being prepared nearby.
Now, onto the most important part—the food! Ol’ Sweet offers two types of cones: sweet and original. The sweet cones are ready-made and served quickly, with the option to add your favorite ice cream flavor. There are many flavors to choose from, so there’s something for everyone. On the other hand, the original cones are customized to your taste, which takes about 15 minutes to prepare. This makes them perfect for those who want a unique, freshly made treat.
I opted for the Chocoholic cone with Nutella and banana, filled with Coaticook ice cream. The portion size was huge for me that I shared it with my kid. We both loved it! I also tried the original cone, filled with coconut and Nutella, and it was just as delicious. Even after taking it home, it still tasted amazing, and a quick reheat in the microwave brought it back to its freshly made state.
On a less positive note, I wasn’t too thrilled with their homemade lemonade. Unfortunately, it’s like most lemonades I’ve tried from various shops—more like lemon-flavored water. It lacked the right balance of sweetness and citrus that I was hoping for.
One more thing I want to mention is that Ol’Sweet has two different menus: one for the summer and one for the winter. They’ll be rolling out their winter menu next week, and I’m excited to try it, especially since it features custard and cream, which sound perfect for the colder months. As a tip for those looking to experiment at home, you can get an empty cone from the shop and fill it with melted cheese or other toppings for a...
Read moreTucked at the corner of Rue Rachel and Rue St-Hubert, Ol’ Sweet Pâtisserie is a delightful little spot that dessert lovers should definitely know about. Parking can be a bit tricky on busy weekends, but once you step inside, the effort feels completely worth it. The cozy space is filled with the smell of freshly baked pastries, and it instantly puts you in a good mood.
The staff here are warm, welcoming, and clearly passionate about what they do. They take the time to explain their treats and help you choose, which makes the experience feel personal and inviting. There are only a few seats inside, so it’s more of a grab-and-go kind of place, but everything is made fresh and beautifully presented.
The star of the show is their Hungarian kürtõskalács (chimney cakes). Watching them prepare these sweet, spiral pastries is part of the fun—the dough is rolled, coated with sugar, and baked until perfectly golden, filling the air with a mouthwatering aroma. You can then customize your order with your choice of toppings, which adds a nice personal touch.
The pastries themselves are light, crisp, and sweet, with just the right balance of flavor and texture. Each bite feels indulgent but never heavy, the kind of dessert that makes you pause and enjoy the moment. Everything we tasted was fresh and made with care.
Ol’ Sweet Pâtisserie isn’t just another dessert shop—it’s a charming little experience. Between the friendly service, unique creations, and unmistakable quality, it’s clear that a lot of thought goes into everything they make.
If you have a sweet tooth, this place is definitely worth the detour. A...
Read moreI stopped by Ol’ Sweet this past July with my friend Hady after a picnic in Parc La Fontaine, and it was the perfect sweet detour. This bakery is all about Hungarian chimney cakes (kürtőskalács), always baked fresh to order so you get that golden caramelized crust and soft fluffy inside.
Walking in felt cozy and nostalgic, with old school music like La Vie en Rose playing and David, the owner, greeting us with such warmth. He told us Ol’ Sweet has been open for four years, though before that they built their name at festivals and events around the city.
We went classic with our order and loved how each one is made freshly in front of you and doesn’t need much topping to shine. The menu also has fun spreads, fruit, or ice cream for anyone who wants add a little extra pizazz .
Bonus: when there is enough extra dough it’s put on the Too Good To Go app, which makes grabbing a treat at the end of the day both delicious and eco-friendly.
Not a collab, just a happy foodie sharing a Montréal gem.
