Excellent food with Celiac Safe options! - I visited Nelson for the first time this past weekend and ate at a few great spots around the area but the one that will remain a core memory is the Main Street Diner! As we arrived there was a major downpour of rain out of nowhere, making rivers in the streets. We saw the owner/manager out in the street clearing storm drains to try and prevent the flood from hitting his patio and other store fronts, good first sign of things to come! The rest of the staff were very friendly and attentive. We were seated quickly and our orders taken soon after. I had the Florentine and they were nice enough to serve it on gluten free bread to accommodate my dietary restriction. I was reassured by staff that they would take extra precautions while preparing my meal which is always very nice to hear! Something as simple as saying "no problem we'll prepare your food in a separate space to mitigate cross contamination" makes me, and I'm sure anyone else with a dietary restriction/food allergy, extremely comfortable and excited for the meal ahead instead of the usual concern that comes with eating at a restaurant. The Florentine was incredible. As a fan of melted cheese, this one definitely delivered and the GF bread was excellent! Of course, if you visit this place for the first time, you absolutely have to order a Greek salad. You've never seen such generous portions for the price ESPECIALLY in this day and age. For reference, I paid MORE for a Teen Burger meal at A&W on the way to Nelson... I would have preferred cold, week-old leftovers from the diner ANY DAY. While not gluten free, the rest of the table enjoyed a huge plate of calamari that looked and smelled incredible. Definitely get that dish if you can. This restaurant's staff work hard to make it good which is why you need to go. I will be back to Nelson just for...
Read moreOn a recent visit to Nelson, my woman and another family local to Nelson decided to eat at this location. we were most certainly not impressed. The service was below mediocre. The waitress came at the beginning to get our order and did not show up again, not even to fill up the drinks. Someone else actually brought us our food and filled our drinks was the waitress was chatting up front. Its not even like the place was busy, but she seemed very enthralled with talking to a gentleman about her age at the front of the restaurant. I understand friends or relationships can be pleasant at the workplace but when it prevents the job to be done... then it becomes a bit of a problem in my opinion. The food itself was all-right, nothing too fancy for the price. I had the Spanakopita with tzatziki sauce, which after being told by the waitress that It would be filling and satisfying, I ended up with 2 tiny little triangles and a bowl of sauce which ended up being 10-12 bucks. My woman ordered fries which were quite bland and not all that crispy. The decor was quite good but the service ruined the ambiance for me. I will not likely return to this location unless major...
Read moreExcellent service, delicious food, excellent quality control, polite and quick to remedy if you have a problem. Thanks Nick for an exceptional meal (loved the extra olives in the Greek Salad) recently. I remember the Diner over its entire 35 years. My folks from Toronto visiting their grandchildren loved it - so many happy memories there. On my first date with my wife of now 31 years, Con tossed me the keys to his sportscar to take her for a spin, we were fellow skiers - nothing more, my date was impressed. How many pounds of hand cut fries did you serve in the halcyon days of Nelson Streetfest Con? I remember Con’s restaurant in Peebles before venturing out on his own. The food, value and service has continued to be outstanding over 40 years! Used to be the only decoration was a single plate covering a hole (?) in the wall. Clean, pleasant atmosphere, beautiful hand crafted bar comfortable seating...
