We were in Nelson in the first week of October on personal business. We had been on the road for a couple of days and were tired of drive-thru/take-out food so asked the Realtor we were dealing with if he knew of any Indian restaurants he could recommend - Tandoori Grill & Lounge was what he suggested (only a couple of blocks from his offices). We were not steered wrong... the food here was fantastic, the kitchen staff obviously have a very deft hand at the spicing and we were presented with a truly delicious meal (rice, Nan, Korma prawns and chicken Rogan Josh). The service was both attentive and sincerely friendly. I would not hesitate to recommend Tandoori (G&L) to anyone. I was glad we had doubled our Nan order as we were able to use it to scour out the last of the sauces from the dishes they were served in and able to enjoy every last mouthful. My only regret is that we opted for "medium" from the four choices of heat level [mild, medium, hot & "Indian hot"]... I think perhaps we should have pushed that up a notch and asked for "hot". Nonetheless the flavours were all there and expertly combined.
Also it was helpful that since the restaurant does not face Baker St. directly that they hand sandwich boards on the street directing us to the side entrance. Warm and welcoming scents greeted us as we took the stairs down to the comfortable dining area....
Read moreAbsolutely amazing food! Kindest waitress I've seen in years!! Some of the absolute best Indian food I've ever had. I especially recommend the samosas, as they are very fluffy and not too heavy on the stomach. The sauces were wonderful for them, too. We also ordered butter chicken and tandoori prawn, and both were wonderful; I made note of the fact that the butter chicken was also extremely creamy (Bonus points that add to the flavour; in my opinion!) All the food here is very palletable. I have been here multiple times and can confirm that it is definitely an extremely memorable restaurant. Amazing service. Though the wait time can be a bit long; it is absolutely worth it! The tea there is so flavourful I was salivating just by the smell, which is a lot coming from a tea lover! When ordering the food, they ask for heat level, and you definitely don't have to worry about being sensitive to spice when ordering mild; I even wished I had ordered spicier! If you want a good experience with Indian food, you should definitely go here! Very genuine, fragrant, delicious food. I do feel the need to highlight the point that the staff was extremely kind here; adding to the experience with a genuine smile and kind words. Would 100% recommend it to anyone with a cultured and...
Read moreI had the lunch special which is served between noon and 3:00p (see photos). I am a vegetarian and went with that option, which came with vegetable curry, Dal Mukhani , Chana Marsala, rice, raita, and naan bread.
The Chana masala was quite good - a unique flavour I had not tried elsewhere. The veg curry was ok. I found the dal spicy and had many undercooked lentils. The rice itself was dry and had hard clamps indicating it was likely reheated. Overall the food was ok. I would place it in the ranking of decent for a smaller town but if it is compared against the urban options it would have to step up the food quality. I’m going to give it a 4-star rural rating.
My server, Manish, was pleasant and cordial. He was attentive. The atmosphere was nice and the music was not overbearing.
The carpets could use a vacuum and the space a deep clean, and a bit of decluttering. With a little effort this could be a very nice space.
I think the price for the lunch special should come down a few bucks but these are the...
