The portions at this restaurant are extremely small and not worth the high price tag. If you’re hungry, I wouldn’t recommend dining here because you’ll likely leave unsatisfied. The food itself was relatively good, but it felt like we were paying more for the fancy presentation than the actual meal. For example, we paid around $50 for what you see in the picture, and we were still hungry when we left. To make matters worse, the service was rushed and unwelcoming. The waitress kept pushing us to leave because the restaurant was closing at 10, which came across as very rude. I understand needing to close on time, but it could have been handled more politely. Overall, while the food tasted decent, the small portions, high prices, and unfriendly service make it hard to recommend this place. There are far better options out there for the same price.

On a cool November evening we decided to focus on hot dishes at Hachi Hana. We ordered chicken yakisoba, spicy agedashi tofu, BBQ salmon cheeks and belly and the Hachi Hana sushi combo. The yakisoba came out sizzling hot; a fairly generous portion and quite tasty. And proper buckwheat soba noodles. The salmon was likewise a good portion. Would have been perfect if the skin was crunchier. Not much to say about the agedashi and sushi. The agedashi had just the right amount of broth so the tofu stayed nice and crisp. The sushi combo was fresh and good value. Service was attentive and polite. We were cheerfully greeted on entry, the server helpful about menu questions and tea was refilled promptly. Overall a very good experience and will return again.

I’m not sure if my experience is because I went to pick up only an hour before they closed. But for my meal I ordered no rice and extra veggies, I got a total of 1 broccoli, 2 pieces of red peppers and 1 carrot and a ton of bean sprouts. I genuinely was looking forward to eating vegetables and chicken. Not bean sprouts and chicken. I personally was expecting a lot more colorful vegetables. The chicken in my dish was decent. The other meal that we ordered, the chicken looked like it was breaded and soggy. I was very disappointed. I’ve attached pictures for reference. I couldn’t go back to the restaurant to fix the issue as they would’ve been closed by the time I drove back to them.

To provide an un-biased review I have to preface this by saying: Having lived in Yaletown for many years and being used to the decent sushi places downtown and on Robson, I moved back to North Van. a couple of years ago and my friends recommended me to Hachi Hana.

First off, I now consider Hachi Hana to be THE best sushi place in the city, except for maybe Tojo's...

The quality is always top notch, and everything, and I mean everything, is FRESH. No farmed salmon here, they only serve wild. From the serving of salad you get in the bento box, to the sashimi and nigiri or the fact that they change their tempura frying oil frequently, I have never had anything but the freshest quality... every time.

Service is always prompt, as far as Japanese restaurants go, even if you're stopping in for lunch and you only have a half hour. They will bring you a bento box within 10-15 minutes of sitting down, and if I'm working near by, I religiously go for lunch, and I only get a half hour for lunch.

Only once in those years have I had questionable service... I was doing some late Christmas shopping one cold Saturday and sat at the bar for lunch and ordered a Kirin and a bento box. After getting my miso soup and a complimentary BBQ salmon skin, the chef noticed that I still hadn't gotten my food and asked the server something in Japanese. After which he quickly apologized and told me the server forgot to ring it in, and in embarrassment, he quickly rolled me a spicy tuna cone, on the house, while I waited. Needless to say, by the time my bento box came, I had a hard time finishing everything... there was so much food.

I keep going back for the friendly and efficient service, but most of all, for the food quality. Not once has the quality been in question. Like I said about the clean tasting tempura, because they change their oil, but the prawn tempura is tender and soft, as if it was JUST cooked... like it should be... and not firm and overcooked, as is usual with most run of the mill sushi places.

I've even stupidly tried all the other sushi places on Lonsdale and I can say, without question, no one even comes close to Hachi Hana. Period.

If you love sushi, then this is about the best you can get in the city without paying an...

Hi, used to think was a five star restaurant as this place has great food however, I recently had an experience that has stopped me from returning again....ordered a veggie ramen without any seaweed in it. I guess that someone forgot about that detail until after it was made. Was seated in a position that I could see into the kitchen. There was a young man working there who I assume was told to remove something from the bowl in front of him prior to it being served. So what I see is this guy trying to fish out stuff from this bowl with a spoon. That apparently didn't work so he stuck his dirty hands into the bowl to pick things out, and I knew his hands were dirty as I just had watched him use what I can only assume is a bacteria ridden dirty cleaning cloth that he had been using to wipe down counters and the sink area for who knows how long. So I tell my spouse that I think that is my food and that this kid had his dirty hands in it and guess what? It was my food. I told the server I wouldn't accept it and what I had seen happen. To their credit they offered to make me a new one however I must admit I really didn't want it. Figured I would just be brought same bowl of food but since I could see the finger bowl in the kitchen sitting on the counter I accepted. Heard them in the back asking the kid if he had done it and he at least admitted it and apologized to what I assume was the manager. Food came and it was ok but I am definitely turned off from the place. Only ate it because I didn't want my spouse to feel bad. You would think after that experience my food would have at least been removed from the bill but it was not which is also a factor of me not returning. That is poor customer service in my eyes not to mention just a plain gross thing to do to someone's food, especially when we are paying a premium to eat out now. Hope you have better luck but look for a seat so you can see in the kitchen, unless you don't mind a different kind of...

We had a very disappointing experience at Hachi Hana Japanese Restaurant last night. We arrived at 9:36 PM and were rushed from the moment we sat down. The staff was rude and clearly in a hurry to close, even though the restaurant was still serving other customers and their posted hours say they’re open until 10:00 PM.

I ordered a California roll, but what I received was definitely not a California roll. In fact, all the sushi looked and tasted the same — cold, flavorless, and low quality. It felt like everything had been pre-made and left in the fridge too long.

To make matters worse, the staff kept coming to our table trying to take our plates away while we were still eating. At exactly 10:00 PM, they told us we had to leave — even though one of our friends was still eating and other diners were still sitting at their tables.

We felt completely disrespected and unwelcome. This is not how paying customers should be treated. We will definitely not be coming back, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for good food or a pleasant...
