I went today with a friend to see what the buzz was about.
Service was very slow despite the store being effectively empty of customers besides us and about two other groups.
Three groups came in while we were waiting for our food and were served while we stood there.
I ordered the Tex Sandwich, Jalapeno Bombers, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy and an Apple Pie.
My friend ordered the Mexicana Sandwich, Fries and Honey-Butter Biscuits.
So I'm going to break it down per item.
Tex Sandwich, 3/5: The most bog standard and average chicken sandwich I have ever eaten. Chicken was of decent quality but neither it nor the batter had any seasoning in it at all. The cheese hadn't melted considering they piled lettuce on top of it. They also forgot to put the tomato on it. Overall the flavor was on par with a Burger King Junior Chicken but the chicken felt like it had more substance.
Jalapeno Bombers 5/5: The standout side of my order, hot, spicy and extremely flavourful. While each is a little smaller than you'd expect, side came with 8 and was the perfect serving size for a side. Would order again.
Mashed Potatoes 2/5: Clearly a bought powder mix, reminiscent of high school cafeteria, that sorta borderline soupy mashed potatoes, especially with the gravy. The gravy was also beef flavoured, red flag there since there is nothing beef on the menu.
Apple Pie 4.5/5: Arguably one of the best fast-food apple pies out there, beat only by the Taco Bell caramel apple empanada. Silky smooth, sweet, nice chunks of apples in a crispy deep fried shell. Would order again.
Mexicana Sandwich 3.5/5: Everything said about the Tex Sandwich above applies here. However it's saved from utter mediocrity by the inclusion of red onion and a spicier sauce. However spicier is the equivalent of saying BBQ sauce is spicier than ketchup.
Fries 2/5: Barely seasoned bog standard crinkle cut fries. If you have an air fryer and a bag of McCain fries you know exactly how they taste.
Honey-Butter Biscuits 5/5: Hot, buttery, crispy yet fluffy. Flavour reminiscent of the best pancakes you've had. People say that Red Lobster has the best biscuit in the chain restaurant game and I think these are a close contender for the crown. Popeyes is put on notice, their biscuit is a gummy saltlick by comparison. Would order again and again and again.
I'll go back one more time to try the regular fried chicken and another side or two. But as of right now it seems Church's Chicken is best described as a few absolutely blow out, diamond-in-the-rough sides hidden within an otherwise incredibly lackluster and mediocre menu.
If they could somehow merge with Popeye's and bring their Honey-Butter Biscuits, Jalapeno Bombers and Apple Pie from Texas to the Louisiana menu we'd possibly have the best fast food chicken restaurant out there.
Also a small thing I noticed, people working there were clearly on break in the main dining area. But instead of eating food from the restaurant they came out of the back with microwave containers of pasta and were eating it just two tables away from us. Was...
Read moreNo one in line to order when I went, cashier was just doing her job nothing more, lobby dining are of the restaurant was a mess to say the least. Straw wrappers, napkins everywhere, looks like no one does lobby checks to wipe tables and throw away garbage. I asked for a 5 piece tender spicy and she was really trying to talk me out of getting any spicy chicken tenders and pieces, said it would take too long but it was very deliberate, and other reviewers mentioned to as well. I wonder what’s up with that. I ended up ordering 5 piece original tenders with fries and 2 piece original with mashed with spicy jalapeño sauce to go. The cashier said “No, Jalapeño” and walked away to get my order. So when she finally came back I asked for ranch and BBQ sauce instead. She replied “ketchup” and now I’m kinda annoyed and she then tells me they have no sauces, which is cool I get it, you haven’t been open long but dude you could have told me that when I ordered it in the beginning and gave me a chance to order a sandwich instead. THEN said “no lids for the drinks” and was literally about to give me full drinks with no lids for my to go order, by this point I was very close to just canceling the whole order on the spot and then she pointed to the display of cases of pop and said I can choose from there then. The manager/owner seemed to sense my annoyance and threw in “sorry we will have sauces soon and lids”
The chicken and tenders were really good and the breading is good as well, the mashed was decent. The HONEY BUTTER BISCUITS are AMAZING, wayyy better than Popeyes pucks and KFCs. If the service and cleanliness were as decent as the food it will be much better. I’ll def go back for...
Read moreI tried this Huron Church at Tecumseh, Windsor Ontario location for the first time and will most likely not ever go back! Although there were no other patrons in the restaurant when I entered and my order was taken promptly I was told I would have to wait 5 minutes for my 5 drumstick combo. Instead it was more like 15 minutes despite there being lots of chicken sitting under the warmer and my side was just a coleslaw. There were 3 ladies working the order desk and one cook in the back. Apparently one was being trained and they were now agressively trying to figure out and put together online/phone in orders and drive through orders and I was just chopped liver standing there waiting. Additionally they gave me the regular instead of the spiced chicken which I had cofirmed in my order twice to them as she kept asking me. I found the whole situation to be really disorganized, rude, and with lack of attention to the fact that I was a paying customer standing right in front of them that they were not paying any respect or attention to. Maybe that's the way they all do business in India, I don't know!? As for the chicken it was not as crispy as we would have liked and the drumsticks were very small though the flavour was good. The coleslaw, however, was spectacular! The cook in the back would shoot me looks as if to say, hey, I'd help but it's their job to take care of the counter and I just do the cooking back here - but it seemed he was the only one that gave a care as he did do his job in constantly pushing more trays of cooked product out to...
