Read moreMore and more, I find myself drifting into Mexican cuisine. I’ve neglected it for too long, so I made a trip downtown to eat at the esteemed Grill 23. It’s in the Talbot Centre.
I asked for three items. Everything came all at once, but I sipped the Cane Sugar Lemonade first. I could tell it was very fresh and natural. They likely squeezed juice out of real lemons. It was, however, not just a lemonade. I tasted something else. This turned out to be real cane sugar molasses.
Seconds later, I started to work on my Super Taco Sampler. It had five tacos prepared in different ways, including Birria, Barbacoa, Taco al Pastor, Chorizo and Carne Asada. The menu says they’re “served authentic on warm corn tortillas with chopped onions, cilantro, lime juice. Each taco is designed to have a specific sauce for the best experience.” A brief description of each one: “Barbacoa: Salsa Verde, Jalapeño-avocado Sauce and Mexican Hot Sauce. Pastor: Pineapple Sauce, Jalapeño-avocado Sauce and Mexican Hot Sauce. Carne Asada: Jalapeño-avocado Sauce and Mexican Hot Sauce. Chorizo: Salsa Verde and Mexican Hot Sauce.”
It took several minutes to chow down on the tacos, yet I still had to face the MONSTERdilla. It was a monstrous mound of three quesadillas, stacked like pancakes. Cheese was sandwiched between each layer, and at the top was my choice of barbacoa beef, chorizo, chicken or birria. Then, that meat was topped with cilantro, onions, salsa verde, and Mexican hot sauce.
I paid $59.24 for this. Although a little high, I couldn’t find any faults with the food.
Grill 23 is the restaurant that the Talbot Centre needs. This taco joint should single-handedly draw...
Read moreThis weekend at the market in downtown, London is Taco Fest. Visibly absent from this festival is the award winning restaurant Grill 23. Many would question why they would be absent despite the possibility of a very lucrative weekend of sales. The reason behind the absence is what makes grill 23 special.
Following what was believed to be a subpar pop-up event in Komoka several years ago Gerry and his wife vowed they would not do those type of events again, but rather focus on what gained them their acclaim; good fresh food made with love and to order each and every time at both of their locations. One in downtown London and the other in small town Ilderton Ontario.
I took Gerry up on a challenge he offered me and tried a taco, made fresh, with love and to order. My word, what a difference between my 2 experiences. It was outstanding, delicious and made me wanting more!!
People of their word are increasingly becoming more and more difficult to find. Gerry, you and your wife are certainly people of your word and I am so damn happy to have found your love and passion for serving delicious genuine food in little ol Ilderton. Thank you...
