Food was good and service was OK for the most part. Near the end of my stay I felt it took much too long for my server to come to my table with the check. I actually had to put on my coat and call out to him to get his attention.
Update (visit on February 19, 2024)
Too bad Google doesn't allow multiple reviews per restaurant. Doing an "update" of a review left four years earlier doesn't seem to be ideal. Anyway, tonight I went in hoping to have a corned beef sandwich. Turns out they don't have Corned Beef on the menu. I can't recall whether it was there four years earlier. Upon entering, nobody came to my table. There was a QR Code on the table for viewing the menu, but I wanted to know if prices on that menu were "inflated" (as e-menus tend to be), or whether the prices were the same as on the "regular menu". Turns out the e-menu is the only menu, so that answered that question. After ordering my meal (a plain hamburger and side salad), I waited the better part of half an hour for the meal to arrive - only to reject it because I had been given a cheeseburger instead of a hamburger. By this point, I was prepared to give a 1- or 2-star review for this visit.
My server visited the table, apologized for the mistake and asked me whether I would accept a free dessert as compensation for the inconvenience. That was acceptable. Perhaps another 15-20 minutes passed before my hamburger and salad arrived. Both the salad and hamburger were substantial, and I have to say the hamburger patty was extremely flavourful. My server was attentive, offering me refills on my soft drink and checking in to make sure all was good. At the end of the meal, I was offered a free cheese cake (I don't eat cheese cake), so I initially declined the dessert. Later, when the server returned with a drink refill, I asked whether I could have the doughnut holes instead and this was provided at no charge. In the end, the server's attentiveness, the very nice flavour of the burger, the substantial size of the salad and the free dessert was enough to sway me to up my score to 4-stars. The only deficiency was due to the kitchen - both in terms of the botched order and the excessive wait time.
Hopefully, it won't be another four years before I come back here, since overall, this was an...
Read moreThis was our first time trying John Max. Looked like a great place for food, sports and some drinks. The food was ok at best, although I will say their wings were really good. However, there is a downside with the wings and that's the price... A "double" order of wings which is literally 16 wings... yes 16 average sized wings is like $27.99 or $28.99 I cant remember. I thought it would be much larger, we were sharing and it was simply not enough for that price. Most places you'd pay what, $18-$22 on the higher end. One of the people dining with us had their fries come out cold with their burger. We asked for our wings to be naked, without breading. They came breaded and had to be sent back. This was a 20 minute delay which caused our guests to finish their meals before our new wings came out. Check ups from wait staff were few and far between. Like I said, the wings were really good, I'll give them that. The overall experience not so much. At the end of all of this they did hand us a $20 gift card which was a kind gesture for the inconvenience we experienced. I am just trying to give an honest review / real feedback. If you are going for a burger and a beer its probably not too bad, however you may have to ask for new fries :) As for wings, TONS of other places to go for great wings that don't cost and arm and a leg for such a small serving....
Read moreJohn Max has delivered good food prior to our last experience, and because of this last experience, I highly doubt I’ll be back. Twice now, we were served cold, stale wings that were cooked prior to our order due to high demand of wings. Sure, I know it’s hard to keep up with demand, but when the wings are literally undercooked, dry, and cold, they’re not good enough to eat. Also, the fries were cold and stale, and paying 5 freakin dollars for cold fries? On top of all that, our server (not going to say her name) only came by twice, to take our order and to get the bill. No hot towels, no refills on our drinks, nada. We waited 25 minutes before getting our food, and by that time our drinks were getting low, yet the other waitress that brought out the food didn’t say anything. It’s kind of rude to only come by twice, not to ask how our food was, not to refill drinks, and then rudely be brought the bill with no hot towels or napkins to clean our hands. Like we’re having wings, how the heck do you not bring napkins or bone bowls. This last experience ruined my night and I highly doubt I’ll pay steep prices for bad food and...
