I popped by for lunch this afternoon. This was the second time I have been here. The first time I tried the chicken noodle soup along with a sandwich. It was good so I thought I would try another kind. Although the 'Sweet Potato Chowder' did not look like a chowder sitting in the pot, it sounded healthy and I like sweet potatoes. Well.....this was not a chowder and the sweet potatoes were no where to be seen. Actually that is not true. There were 3-4 "bits" about the size of the kernels of corn (This was no exaggeration. I probably spent a good 2-3 minutes stirring up the soup to see what was actually in it) Are sweet potatoes heavier than regular potatoes? Were they hiding at the bottom of the pot? Are they really expensive this time of year? Hmmm. So many questions.... If there is one thing that causes me the greatest disappointment, it is when I am hungry and the food I have ordered is NOTHING like I expected or what was described in the menu (we're talking about other restaurants here). I know how to cook. I know what stewed tomatoes taste like. You know....the cans of diced tomatoes you can get to add to other dishes? That is all I tasted in this soup. Tomatoes! Sure there were 4 chunks of regular potatoes (yes....I looked for them and counted them) and there was a lot of corn. Don't forget some zucchini and celery but there was no other flavour and really...there was no sweet potato either! Honest! It did not even taste like a good vegetable soup. By the time I got back to my office to eat what I had bought, I was famished and when I discovered what I actually had....Well, I could have cried. (Not really but I was SUPER disappointed.) The buttered onion bun was good but I could only eat about 2/3 of the large size container of soup. Why? Because I was eating a bunch of stewed tomatoes.!!!! You need to either revamp this recipe or take it off the menu. Here is what I suggest. First, you need a "cream" base. To make it healthy, how about pureeing some cooked sweet potatoes (yes...more than one) with some 1% or 2% milk OR almond milk to keep it vegan. Use a base of veggie stock. Then you actually ADD chunks of sweet potatoes along with some other potatoes, maybe a bit of corn. And please figure out something for a pop of flavour. I'm not heartless, just honest. I will still give a 4 star rating. The staff were very nice and I will be back for another kind of soup but the "sweet potato chowder" was a thumbs...
Read moreMy mom is visiting from Nova Scotia and she has restrictions when eating do to her health as well as she has a hard time getting around. I heard that the Piping Kettle on commissioners Rd offers good soups which is one thing she can have. So I had called yesterday to inquire about the soups as she is not able to have anything with large chunks in it and they said that they would be able to puree her soup for her. we were very happy and excited to hear that and that she would be able to enjoy a nice lunch out. But when I arrived I was surprised that there was NO inside dinning or OUT side dinning options. How the heck are you able to enjoy a nice bowl of soup when you can't sit down to eat it. The girl at the counter suggested that we could stand at the counter and have our lunch. ( that's just sad and upsetting). On the Web site it shows inside dinning , take out , deliver. I think that if you don't offer the inside dinning you have to make sure your website indicates that. So needles to say we DID NOT order lunch at your establishment. Very very disappointed . I think management needs to rethink this and open up the inside dinning as it is time and all other business now have inside dinning. So I give the Piping Kettle NO star rating. Poor serves :(
Also in order to post my comment I had to give it one Star which in this case it deserves a zero rating,...
Read moreI agree with reviews for better quality and service at Huron Street location. On Friday I went to Commissioners location and it was a disaster right from the get go. The girl serving me could not understand me (I'm Caucasian Canadian. . She was not). Said she couldn't hear because of the plexiglass divider and her mask. I asked her what her mask had to do with her ears. I placed my order again and she said she still couldn't hear me. At that point the "manager" Chandler stepped rudely in front of the girl trying to help me and said in a very snarky tone that SHE was the manager and what did I want. Again I told her and SHE couldn't hear me. I said I didn't understand what more I could do and Chandler very rudely said I could leave because I was being rude and if I didn't leave she would call the Police..a little overreactive. On Monday I went to Huron location and from the minute I walked in the young girl had a very big smile, asked me how I was, took my order. She was extremely pleasant..very easy to do. I think Chandler needs to work with the young girl at Huron Street and maybe she'll learn better skills in dealing with customers. I order lunch for the office at Commissioners every day of the week...huge loss for them..lots of places have lunch menus. Message for Chandler..get off your high horse and remember you are there to serve your...
