It's such a shame that five stars is the limit because this place truly deserves more. The food is surprisingly (but not surprisingly) fantastic, thanks to the owners' unwavering dedication to nutrition, our planet, and all things green. Their passion and love shine through in every bite. Fun fact: they've been in the grocery business for at least 3-4 generations, a few stores, the original still on Cumberland Street, (the '100 block,') just half a block south of Second St. West, another beautiful and heartbreakingly kind next-of-kin who owns and maintains the original McMillan's.
I'll never forget the time shortly after my husband passed on, I was robbed most of our life savings, I felt I had no choice but to go to the store, lower my standards (I recalled their decades' old sign, "no store credit" (I looked for it, but didn't see it); while asking the young man if he would be kind enough to let me borrow / oops: I 'think' he knew, I could tell by his look that he was probably going to turn me down but with utmost empathy, during the brief pause, I finished my sentence, "for my two cats." His eyes opened big and wide, interrupting me, "CATS?!!" gleefully pointing me in the right direction.
With their doors open 24 hours a day, every day, I feel like I'm back in Toronto, where you can visit a bank or pharmacy at 3 AM. The staff is incredible, I'm thoroughly impressed with each and every one of them; they all embody the spirit of the owners, Cyndi and Dave.
FYI: Cyndi was spelled like that before Cyndi Lauper's name gained its fame as a given name.
Despite being a small business, they're thriving, thanks in large part to the exceptional food, the welcoming atmosphere, and the outdoor patio with its charming picnic tables and umbrellas, perfectly distanced on a large corner lot, off from the kitchen. The kitchen is a real caboose, probably circa mid-1940s, sterile and well-preserved. It's truly out of this world! Plus, it's a one-stop shop for families, travelers, or the single guy out on a first date, so impressed that it won't be their last.
Whether you're craving treats, meals, ice cream, or dairy products, your furry friends' needs are also covered with a variety of meals and treats. If you forgot your money at home, there's access to an ATM machine inside the store. Who knows, if you've got a couple of dollars weighing you down, you might take a chance on winning $1 million from a vast array of scratch tickets or regular weekly lottery tickets.
If you're visiting from out-of-town and want to be wowed, be sure to swing by 35 Marlborough Street, corner of First Street East. They DO go the extra mile (peel real potatoes, use 100% real ground beef, real cheese ... there's nothing artificial about them or their food. It may go against their own grain, they are not braggart, but rather, the kind of people who don't talk about people, but who will also feed your mind with intellectual conversation, and actively reciprocate.
Wow, now they deliver at week's end, till 2 AM. Who could want...
