Tried Flipper’s for the first time last night. It was a cool little out of the way joint. Intimate, cozy, and comfortable. It only had a few tables on a Sunday night with a few regulars up at the bar. I’m assuming it was the owner/ manager serving us. She was able to easily serve the entire restaurant on this quiet evening. I had the Seafood Linguine. It had a very plentiful serving of seafood with the pasta and the sauce had a nice flavour but was way, way over salted. My friend and I shared an order of crab cakes which were quite good. For her main course my friend had the pan fried Sea Scallops which were a good size and cooked nicely. However the side that came with her meal was a mashed squash which was ice cold. Neither of us are the type to complain and the food was edible so we just ate our meals. I’m not posting my complaints to hurt business as we plan to return and try other dishes. We liked the ambience and judging by other reviews want to give Flipper’s another go. We did however find it odd that bread was not brought out at any time and I don’t remember seeing it...
Read moreMy partner and mine's first visit to this restaurant on February 21 2021 for dinner. This was also our first visit to any establishment since the stay at home order was lifted in Ottawa. We were excited to support local in person again, but the experience was ruined by another patron. This patron was coughing very loudly, unmasked throughout their meal and then went on to engage in a very loud conversation with their waiter that COVID-19 is a hoax and they were "booming in business as an estate and wills" businessman. Our meals themself were ok, there were several substitutions the kitchen made without asking us if we were ok with, which was dissappointing. We feel fortunate to be healthy and capable to support local businesses, but this experience left a very terrible taste. That patron can put Flippers out of business with his recklessness, period. There were no contact tracing information collected by Flippers, but I'd suggest anyone that dined there on February 21 from...
Read moreI went to Flippers with three longtime friends last night. I am uncertain that I will go back.
My meal was something that I thought it should be standard fare in a seafood restaurant. I had seafood chowder and Moules et Frites. The chowder was tasty enough but not nearly warm enough. The mussels were tiny and over-cooked with one in five not fully open and all almost impossible to remove from the shell. No bread was served with which to soak up the rather good broth. The french fries were soggy and without taste.
The table was suitable for two people, perhaps, but certainly not for four. The tablecloth and napkins were clean and new. No finger bowl was offered although it would’ve been an appropriate addition to a messy meal like mussels. Of course, there would have been no room on the table for an additional bowl.
All in all it was a disappointing evening at a restaurant that I have enjoyed on...
