Owners+staff have serious game. Everything they do lately feels well thought out. They also won the "obama cookie" award for the current administration which is "kind of a big deal."
When we moved here during covid it felt like they were struggling a bit and whether due to the experience level, or quite possibly, a need to accomodate less adventurous palates, we felt their flavors were a bit tame compared to similar places in Toronto...
They persisted through some tough times and came out of it all the stronger, you have to have a lot of respect for that in and of itself.
But if you live and die for the food, fear not, these days they entirely deserve their reputation as top of the class for ice cream and related snacks. The hong kong milk tea ice cream for example is really punchy as it should be, whilst they also pull off more conservative flavors profiles (the biden ice cream falls into this category) and even go farther by re-inventing them. All with consistent excellence.
But that's just basic for them now... Our favorite is now their series of ice cream sandwiches. This is luxury stuff but their premade sandwiches are really good value. If you and anyone you may be kissing today is brave (or just cool and interesting) you could try the durian option -- it comes surprisingly close to fresh stuff and it will be... in your nose and your mouth for a while. I'm told thats a good thing. Either way if you get the option to do a brulee with any of these, take it -- another great thing they brang to town.
Last but not least they are innovating in the classic bubble waffle territory. This is a somewhat sacred topic to my wife as she had a strong belief there was only one right way to do them... Moo Shu is the only place that gotten her to admit otherwise, both through their vegan bake for it but also really surprising batter mixes. Our favourite was the pretzel waffle. These are great with or...
Read morePhenomenal. Delicious. Must-try. Favourite. Keep coming back for more. These are all very applicable phrases to describe this quaint, friendly, mouthwatering ice cream. They have feature flavours, pints to take home, chocolate dipped ice creams bars and waffle come pieces for purchase. I absolutely love this place. Their ice cream is hand made, small batch and the staff are incredibly friendly, kind and helpful. They allow you to taste as many flavours as you want using double sided wooden spoons which is not only environmentally friendly but brings back this quintessential nostalgic feeling of childhood ice cream when it was purchased in cups. They offer free water, again with paper cups (environmentally friendly) and sell mugs and t shirts with variations of their logo. I tried the grandma's house, milk tea, black sesame and pomelo lychee (marbled Jade). I ended up getting a double scoop of the marbled Jade and grandma's house (pu-erh tea and Mandarin peel) in a waffle cone. The waffle cone was thin, fresh and delicious!! It's made fresh on site with a waffle maker. Everything is perfectly balanced and not overly sweet. Nowhere else could I imagine getting a double scoop and finishing the entire thing. Oh and they have vegan options!!! Stop reading my review and get over there...you won't regret it. It'll become your new favourite spot. I wish I loved in Ottawa. Hey, can you guys open a location in...
Read moreCame with a friend after having this place recommended by many friends and acquaintances as the best ice cream place in the city.
The service was very friendly, and I love that there is no tip option on the machine because they pay their staff a living wage. Love to see it and I am okay with paying a bit more to enable that.
I tried a scoop of the HK Milk Tea, and a scoop of the White Rabbit.
The White Rabbit I guess I expected to be similar to a vanilla and I'm not sure if it's the butter or condensed milk in there but it just wasn't the flavor I was expecting, nor did I find it any better than any other vanilla I've had from other local places.
The HK Milk Tea, I found too strong on the bitter tea notes, and not enough of the sweet or milky notes. I found it left a bitter taste on my palate for quite a while that I didn't really enjoy. I have had HK Milk Tea on it's own before so I had an idea of what to expect but this wasn't quite it.
Overall though, I just didn't really enjoy it all that much, though that is due to the flavors not being to my own tastes, which is subjective. The texture of both ice creams were spot on though and were rich and creamy, which is more of an objective measure of quality than my own personal preferences and tastes of the flavors themselves. They are well loved and I think that's definitely warranted if the flavors are to your personal preferences, they just...
