Always welcoming and fun, always a live band on and only $5 cover, parking nearby, usually a bit older and mixed crowd so feel quite safe everyone always friendly never a bad experience, unique building with a story behind it as well so its neat to go inside, have met people who's great grandfather's have photo at the door. A good inexpensive Hotdog are the popular item they used to be known for that would get a lot of people into the door and fed,not sure what they do now with new owners. Pool table also at the ack for your get togethers with friends as well as TV's going on one side more so than the other on case you want to watch sports while others enjoy music and dance. It does get a little too hot there, multiple fans to help circulate the air would be beneficial by all means and or at least one portable ac unit in the summertime. I believe upstairs is a rentable hall, at least used to be. This place worth a try if you enjoy live music or going a but back in time to the good 'ol days, I suggest everyone to go here at least once in their life or if you have friends/family visiting Ottawa for a reminiscent time too, if only the walls could talk.

Updated: While some things have changed, with the new ownership, the crowd, the service, and the comfort food remains! Mmmm! I like the Bacon Cheeseburger Platter! Nestled in the heart of Hintonburg, the Carleton Tavern is an institution and favourite spot for many. Sunday morning breakfast is simple and straightforward (poached eggs, homefries and sausage), a reflection of its strong roots and history. Service is friendly, and at times a bit sparse, but the quiet and solitude were welcomed on an early Sunday morning. When you are there for lunch - it’s lively and always accommodating! You can start your day with breakfast and then cross the street to the Parkdale Market. It’s a win-win.

I am attaching a photo of the Nachos that were delivered to my table. There was no veg on it and I brought that to the attention of the waitress. Just nachos, cheeses, and the chicken was not cold but cool. She checked with the cook. There was a problem with the computer. They offered to put some veg on it but I decided to eat it the way it was. I did not finish it. They gave me a discount. With the discount it was $16. tax in. I left a $3 tip because the waitress was good about it. It wasn't her fault. I had already left $2. tip on my drink. I ate there before under the former owner and I never had a problem.

Longtime patron of the Carleton Tavern, but my latest visit was the first after their change in management, who seem to have changed one crucial aspect: the $2 hot dogs!

They are now $3 hot dogs, a totally fair price change after many years. But they've gone from top-tier, grade 'A' specimens of "meat in tube form" to literally the worst hot dog I've ever paid for. I'm honestly not sure how it was achieved. The old ones were amazing: steamed in beer and slathered in mustard with onions and sauerkraut. The new ones are kind of like a Slim Jim cooked in the microwave until it achieves the consistency of boot leather.

Everything else is still the same old Carleton, and I still can't recommend the place enough. It's a time capsule of the glory days of dive bars, with creaking chairs and quart beers and tiny glasses. But please, new owners, bring back our...

I've heard such great things about this place and wanted to try it. My car isn't starting (being damp after the last few days). I checked the weather and saw the rain isn't supposed to fall until well after 2 pm. (it was 11am) After 3 days with no power due to the tornado, all of our food had to be thrown out so I put the dog on the leash and figured I'd sit on that patio while he enjoyed being outside (not inside the patio) however I was given a hard time about sitting on the patio even though I explained that I had already checked the weather and if it started to rain I would come inside and get my bill. The guy still gave me a hard time. I wasn't even there for the free lunch. I would have been one of the highest payers until 1pm. Very upset and...
