Tartelette is a new cafe/bakery that caters to the Ottawa South area and its surroundings. It stands out for its location on a footpath along a park, which provides a pleasant and natural setting for its outdoor seating. Unlike many other cafes and restaurants in Ottawa that use parking spots as patios, Tartelette offers a quiet and secluded environment away from the road for its customers.
The selection of baked goods and beverages is great, and the quality is superb. We tried the apple turnover and the almond croissant, both of which were delicious. The pastry was tender and flaky, but not too flaky to make a mess. I appreciated that Tartelette had found the sweet spot between too crumbly and too dense. The filling was generous and tasty.
The latte was also excellent, made with good beans and prepared with care by an experienced barista. The milk was at the perfect temperature (I requested a lower temp) and the foam was frothed to perfection. The barista was lovely and attentive, and spoke to me in French when she recognized my use of French term when ordering the almond croissant. She had grown up in France so we briefly chatted while she prepared my latte. Her French accent (from France) and use of terms used in bakeries in France further added to the experience.
The only minor issues I encountered were the lack of a place to tie up my dog outside, and the confusion about the line inside. I only take my dog in to order when I am absolutely certain it she is welcome, so I had someone keep her outside. These are easily solvable problems that did not affect my overall experience. I enjoyed the quiet relaxing atmosphere of the cafe’s patio, and I plan to visit it regularly.
Tartelette is a one-off cafe/bakery that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a quality...
Read moreFirst time at Tartelette, and I was not wowed in the way I expected, unfortunately. The place is nice, and they definitely have a variety of delicious creations to offer. However, we were disappointed with a few items during our visit.
The plain croissant was very, very good. Great laminated layers and good taste. The famous pistachio and rose croissant was also good. But the inside of the dough was a bit too gooey for our taste. We were hoping to get a clear taste of the pistachio and rose flavors but somehow missed it. Of course, we tried a tart and a mini cheesecake. They were very good, a bit oversweet and definitely too pricey for the item. Now, the biggest dissatisfaction came from the quality of the decaf coffee and the scones. The dough was clearly overworked. The buttery flaky crumble of a high-end scone was not there at all. The flavor of the dough was plain and underwhelming, so the overall product was a big disappointment, especially when it was charged at a perfect scone price. I ordered a decaf extra shot latte, and I could not drink it. Even with the extra shot, the coffee flavor and aroma were not there. Not what you expect from an $8 latte. The rest of my group ordered the regular late and they enjoyed it, so I guess the decaf only is not of quality.
On a side note, it was clear that the shop was understaffed. Not enough clean cups and plates, piles of dirty dishes everywhere, dirty counters, and rushed staff... Not the expected combination for this trending...
Read moreExtremely disappointing experience at Tartelette recently. I used to love this place last summer, but what happened this year especially with the current manager is unacceptable.
I visited twice this week (yesterday and the day before) and both times were ruined by the attitude of a man in his 30s or 40s who seems to be the manager. He was rude, unaccommodating, and made the atmosphere incredibly unpleasant.
I had asked for an iced coffee without ice cubes just cold milk and espresso because I don’t like the taste of their large ice cubes when they melt, especially in such a small cup. I clearly told him I understood it would be warm and cold mixed, and that I was totally fine with it . it was my choice. Still, he pushed back in a very condescending way. The poor barista, who was visibly uncomfortable, kindly made it for me anyway, but he hovered over her, pressuring her not to fill the cup completely as if to punish me for not following his rules.
Worse, even though we said we were dining in (I was with two friends I brought to discover the café), he served everything in takeout cups and plastic bags while everyone else around us had proper cups and plates. It was embarrassing and frankly disrespectful. My friends were disappointed, and I felt awkward having recommended the place.
I paid nearly $20 for a small coffee and croissant, which I used to justify for the location and experience but that experience no longer exists. As long as this manager is there, I won’t be...
