This tiny place does a bustling take-out business, and seems more focused on that, than on in-restaurant dining. It lives in a strip mall in a tiny bay not more than 15-20 ft wide.
The veggie rolls were nice and crunchy and nicely filled. We liked two of our choices - the Penaeng Chicken red curry was rich and sweet and had a generous helping of chicken, but no veggies. And the chicken pad thai was very good, also with a generous serving of chicken.
The third, the Pad Kee Maw noodles with shrimp had lots of shrimp, and the noodles were nicely chewy, but the dish was kind of plainly spiced, looked a bit drab and again, had very few veggies.
For dining in, the restaurant is very small and very noisy. There is just one row of tables - maybe 20 seats in total. The takeout Door Dash/Uber Eats people come and go continuously, and the staff shout orders to the kitchen from the front and generally go about their business loudly.
The server was alone and very busy. Service is polite, and the kitchen quick, but your cutlery may arrive in a pile with some napkins that you arrange yourself.
This is a fine place, but I think the current Google rating of 4.6 must be largely based on the takeout experience and shouldn't be used to decide where to have a special dinner with friends and family. Other restaurants with seemingly lower scores are more service and...
Read moreMy friend and I visited Thai Lanna for the first time. We love to try different Thai spots in Ottawa and this one had a high rating, so we wanted to try it out.
We ordered the Green Mango Salad & the Chicken Skewers for our appetizers. The mango salad was very fresh and delicious. I just wished they gave us more shrimp. The chicken skewers with peanut sauce.
For our main dishes, we ordered the Beef pad see ew and the chicken penang curry. The pad see we was delicious! It had the right amount of seasoning and all the ingredients were cooked well! Loved that they give lots of vegetables too! The chicken Penang curry was very flavourful. Creamy and they give a lot of chicken. The curry was to die for. My friend and I said we could drink the curry by itself and drenched our rice in it!
For dessert, their seasonal Mango sticky rice. Very sweet mango and soft sticky rice. Perfect dessert to end the evening!
Overall it was such a nice visit! Customer service was good. Cute spot located on bank street with around 10-12 person seating. Thai Lanna is a must visit if you’re looking for authentic Thai cuisine. The chef is also...
Read moreI ordered the Pad Thai since the menu was rather small. The taste was sweet, which I am not accustomed to, the noodles and chicken were both chewy, and it had the flavour of alphaghetti Heinz pasta sauce. I asked for hoisin sauce (I know it is Vietnamese, but it common to many Thai restaurants) which the server brought out some spicy yellow sauce. I then asked for Sriracha sauce, or simply chili paste if they did not have any and the server brought out a small bowl of Frank's Red Hot sauce.
Overall I have to say the atmosphere was quaint and nice, but the miscommunication, cost, poor taste, and low quality of food is enough for me to warn others to avoid this restaurant unless they are forced to go here. I am sure it is their worst dish, but I am sure never going back to try any other over...
