Shafiq's is one of those rare restaurants that creates almost an enthusiast out of a customer.
While you may try other Indian restaurants or other restaurants of all different types---some very good, it's Shafiq's that'll always be the restaurant to go back to because it's ridiculously good and because you enjoy being there. Many places in comparison are just where you go when you need something to eat, but the quality of, and cohesiveness between Taste of India's dishes, service and restaurant-atmosphere are still unmatched in my mind.
The sag paneer, madras, vindaloo, tika masala, butter chicken, buttered or garlic-naan, papadum, onion-bhaji, cucumber rheta, the different rices (like the yellow, palao rice), the various desserts (such as the Gulab Jamun, I highly recommend)...it doesn't really matter what you order because it's all beautifully made; second to none.
The servers are always friendly and extremely attentive, while the actual layout of the restaurant is cozy and warm, but still spacious. The volume of the room is always nice and quiet. There is original artwork lining the walls as well as dog-sized brass-elephant sculptures. At one point there was a display of all different types of spices and ingrediants used throughout the menu. There is a patio in the summer and free parking nearby.
Shafiq's is hands-down the best restaurant in Peterborough, but I've never found a better restaurant elsewhere; even while including Indian restaurants...
Read moreMy family ordered what we thought would be a substantial amount of food through skip the dishes on Friday Feb 23rd for my Mom's birthday. Our family has ordered from Shafiqs many times over the years and we have never had an issue, but when we received our food we were disappointed to find that the take-out containers where much smaller than they used to be. A few of them weren't even full. The bill was over $140 (excluding skip the dishes fees) and we barely had enough food for 5 adults. We ordered 6 main dishes rice and nann. For reference they used to use 16oz take-out containers and we received 12 oz containers. Thats 25% less food while the prices remain the same or more. When we called to inform them of the issue they were indifferent and tried to blame skip the dishes, which is ridiculous. They eventually sent out another small container of butter chicken. Their only Point of redemption was that we did enjoy the food we received dispite of the small portions. We will not be ordering from Shafiqs again and would not recommend them...
Read morePoor quality, no flavor, awful portion size, extremely over priced. The two chicken dishes ( that had 2-3 small chunks of chicken in each) were $20 each. The Masala was a bowl of spicy ketchup and the butter chicken was a bowl of greasy cream that literally tasted like warm milk. The pekora was burnt and the size of a golf ball. $7 for 2 of them and the samosas were the worst flavor and texture I've eaten. The rice containers (2)were half full and the Naan (no picture) wasn't even cooked. It was warm wet Naan. $102 before delivery and skip fees for a meal that was outmatched by frozen tv dinners forgotten about in your grandmother's freezer. Do not waste your money to find out what taste of India that Shafiq will try to scam you on. I've never called a restaurant to express to them how ripped off I felt until today. I requested a refund and told them they could come get the food and drop off the cash and they refused to compensate me. I attempted to upload a video of my experience but it will not work. I wouldn't even feed it to...
