Located in the heart of old Richmond Hill, Arjan (ارجان) Restaurant (formerly known as Golpayegani Kabab Sara) presents a banquet of Persian delicacies.
With expert suggestions provided by the owner, Mehran, I selected a trio of items, including:
Ash-reshteh (آش رشته) Loqma kebab wrap (کباب لقمه) Pan Torsh (Pomegranate) kebab (کباب تابه ای)
The Ash-reshteh was a rich, hearty Persian noodle soup mixed with greens/herbs and legumes. Perfect for a cold winter day.
The Loqma kebab wraps were meaty and light, and served as a worthy introduction to the main course - the Pan Torsh kebab. This was a work of genius - the sweet, tart, tangy infusion of pomegranate permeating the flat chaplee-style kebab.
Mehran generously took the time to sit together and offer his wisdom regarding the finer points of Persian cuisine. I learned a great deal about the unique culinary culture of Iran, and for this I am very grateful.
For those with an affection for art, the north wall of Arjan Restaurant enchants with a vision of Mevlana (the great Persian poet Jalal al-Din Rumi) whirling in ecstasy in search of the divine.
The south wall presents a joyful burst of love (عشق - eshq) depicted in calligraphy, inspired by the writings of Saib Tabrizi - the Persian master of the poetic form known as the 'ghazal'.
Among the many things I discovered at Arjan Restaurant, was the word that best describes the meal I had just enjoyed: خوشمزه - khoshmazeh - delicious....
Read moreLast week, my husband and I visited a restaurant he had been raving about for lunch. I didn’t have high expectations for the atmosphere, as we were simply looking to grab a good kabob and leave, especially since I had work afterward.
The young woman behind the counter was very sweet and attentive, which initially gave us a positive impression. Unfortunately, the food fell far short of expectations. We started with the barley soup, which clearly wasn’t fresh. It had been microwaved to the point that the bowl was too hot to touch, and we actually burned our hands and tongues from the heat.
Next came the main course. We ordered a Barg and a Koobideh. The Koobideh was decent, with some flavor, but the Barg—priced at nearly $30—was a huge disappointment. The plate was mostly filled with rice, which was not fresh and tasted reheated. The skewer was shockingly small, far from what you’d expect for a regular-sized Barg. The meat had almost no flavor, as if it had only been marinated in onion overnight and grilled.
For a $30 meal, this level of quality is unacceptable. It’s hard to understand how this place receives 5-star reviews unless they’re coming from family or friends. We certainly won’t be returning and cannot recommend it to others based on...
