This is a HK style cafe but with a Macau twist I think. It has Macau version of curry instead of HK style curry.
First of all, their prices are like Copa Cafe so you'd think there'd be a little more quality in their food, but it's not. I don't think the food reflects the price at all. I came at lunch time and ordered one of their lunch specials. I forgot what it was called. It was like "ying yang fried rice" like at all the other HK style restaurants, but with a different name. It was the first one of their lunch special list.
It comes with garlic bread, soup (choice of HK borsht or cream soup), and drink. Garlic bread had about a 1 inch radial spread and that was it. Not crispy, just room temperature and soft. The cream soup was not creamy at all. Had small bits of ham. Definitely not as much stuff as other restaurants.
The fried rice came with half tomato/shrimp sauce, and half Macau style chicken curry. I have been to many HK style restaurant here in Vancouver and and in HK and they make the Macau "Portuguese style curry" and this tasted nothing like it. Granted, I've only been to Macau 3 times but I've never tried their curry. I assumed HK would make the same as Macau since we are beside each other. Anyways, it was salty, lacked flavor, very little pieces of chicken. The tomato sauce side had a fair amount of shrimp, but no tomato taste. Everything didn't seem to have much of the original taste, but just salty taste.
We also ordered an appetizer - smoke salmon with fruit salad. I assumed a fruit salad would come as canned fruit mixed with mayo like at all HK style restaurants. This place was just honeydew and cantaulope. It was gross. Almost $10 for 2 pieces of smoke salmon and melons.
Nothing taste like anything I've ever eaten before at a HK style restaurant before. Expensive for the low quality food. Food has no taste. Will not...
Read moreIn a city where Deer Garden, Cattle Cafe, and Pearl Castle reign. I didn't not know what to expect from La Amigo. Came to La Amigo for an early dinner on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't too busy. I have never been to this complex and La Amigo is tucked away in the corner. It is one of the many HK cafes on Alexandra Road.
From the outside, it looks pretty dingy, and I didn't have much hope for it at all. But the minute you go inside, you are in for a surprise. It is not your typical HK cafe restaurants. The first thing I notice was the atmosphere. The place looks like it has been recently renovated with a lot of wooden decor and almost like new booths. There were quite a few people inside already, which surprised me, considering how tucked away it is. I have never even heard of it.
Service was typical of HK cafes. They were quick, efficient, not super friendly but they aren't rude either.
We ordered a fettuccine meal, a baked Portuguese chicken on rice, malaysian noodles and pork chop on rice. From the 4 dishes, all of us agreed that only 2 of them were decent enough to order again. The fettuccine and pork chop on rice. The portuguese chicken on rice was a little too liquidy and lacked the coconut milk that will give it the creamy flavour. The malaysian noodles were ok, but not great.
I will likely come back again and try some of the other meals. It isn't as crowded as the other restaurants and it is...
Read moreI had a pretty disappointing experience at this restaurant tonight. To be fair, the food quality is decent, but the customer service was truly lacking.
Here’s what happened: My fiancée and I arrived around 10:20 pm, and the "open" sign was still on. However, as soon as we walked in, one of the waitresses in short hair gave us an impatient look and immediately said, "You need to hurry! The chef is finishing up for the night. Don’t order any baked items, just get something quick." We took our seats, and she tossed two menus on the table and walked away.
Less than a minute later, as we were still looking through the menu, she returned and asked, "What do you want to eat?" Feeling pressured, we quickly picked one dish, but she continued to hover over us, making us feel rushed to choose a second one without enough time to decide properly.
We finished our meal around 10:50 pm and left before 11 pm. The entire experience felt unpleasant, and the customer service left much to be desired. I can understand why they have so many one-star reviews.
A note to the restaurant owner: Food quality is important, but good customer service is equally essential.
