First I want to say overall it was a pleasant experience. The servers were on top of everything and we were seated and served very quickly. The food however I think could use some work. I absolutely love the idea of local and house made - but it needs to be executed a little better. In my opinion, of course. We started with the chips and dip which was delicious, however it was obvious they were served with a cheap ripple chip. The menu does state "ripple chips" so I kind of knew what I was getting into but if they had served it with house made potato chips it would have been so much better. Also, the cheese melted on top made it very hard to "dip". The first couple bites were just straight cheese and then when we finally got to the actual dip it was very delicious. We ordered it spicy and it honestly could have used a little more spice but that could just be a personal preference. Then we had the pastrami on rye and the banh mi, the flavours on both were great, however cold sandwiches on a September evening on the patio just felt odd. It still would've felt odd eating them inside as well. Heating the meat would make for a much better sandwich. For the "chefs side" - which was again odd, we were unfortunately served a very bland and boring pasta salad. It was macaroni with only corn and raw red onions and a very bland dressing. It desperately needed salt but there were none on the tables. I think a more traditional chefs salad or fries (or homemade potato chips as previously mentioned) would have gone over much better. Maybe even a nice bowl of soup. I was also a little disappointed to not see any fish on the menu - unless I missed it but I don't think I did. To be in Gimli, on the lake, and not have any fish was surprising.
Again, it wasn't horrible but it wasn't that great either. I of course understand that they just opened so they're still figuring everything out so I will of course visit again in a couple months.
I love the idea of a as homemade as possible menu with locally sourced products - but that doesn't always guarantee a better outcome. I think the menu is so close to being excellent - just a few minor tweaks and it would elevate it so much. I am by no means an expert but being in the industry for 14 years I feel like I do have some knowledge, so I hope this constructive criticism is taken as just that and not with any unintentional malice.
I look forward to coming back in a...
Read moreI attended the Interlake Brewing Co in Gimili with a buddy to sample their food and beer this past Tuesday. We decided to sit in the open air rooftop patio that had a great view of Gimili and an obstructed view of Lake Winnipeg. It was a beautiful day and a cool beer with some food would really hit the spot.
Before I give my review I must first say that I will go there again to give it another try.
The staff and the atmosphere is quite appealing and friendly. Although not too extensive, their menu had some intriguing dishes on offer. We both had the fish and chips which were nicely battered pieces of pickerel. So well battered that it was not possible to remove it from the fish( I do this because I’m counting calories). The fries were just ok and the beer was hit and miss. I first tried a lighter beer( cannot recall the name) and it was bitter in a bad way. I sent it back and got an IPA inspired beer which was much better. The issue with this place is that the service was incredibly slow. So slow that I did not get my replacement beer until we were ready to leave. Even with this occurrence I still gave them 4 stars because there was only one server on the patio and probably 25 people. Thus the slow service. The food and drinks ( after the return) were quite good. And the atmosphere was very welcoming. That’s the reason that I will go again. Call a spade a spade, the service was terrible but it wasn’t the servers fault and hopefully next time they’ll be...
Read moreThis is my new favourite spot in Gimli and a MUST if you're visiting the area. I have a lot more to say, but the TLDR is this a fantastic spot and you’d be truly missing out if you didn’t give them a visit.
So with the help of the owners, Graeme and Kristin, I organized a retreat night at the Interlake Brewing company for over 60 people. They were so helpful and accommodating to our group. When I first started planning this event, I called them less than a week after they initially opened, and they hit the ground running planning this event with no hesitation. They allowed us to have special drinks for the night, plus their wonderful assortments of beers and a fantastic spread of snacks for us! The theme for the night was Cowboys and their bartenders even dressed up with us! Throughout the night all the servers were polite, patient and just as excited to be there as we were. The night exceeded all my expectations and every single person had a great time! Like I said above, Interlake Brewing is an absolute must if you’re visiting Gimli any...
