The WORKS Craft Burgers & Beer — Restaurant in St. Catharines

I recently had a deeply unsettling experience at The Works, and it is with a heavy heart that I share my thoughts on what transpired during my visit. My boyfriend and I decided to dine at this establishment, excited to enjoy a meal together last night (November 23, 2023) at around 4 pm. Unfortunately, the evening took a sour turn due to the discriminatory treatment I faced.

From the moment we walked in, I sensed an uncomfortable shift in the atmosphere. The staff's demeanor towards me, a person of color, was markedly different from their treatment of my white boyfriend. It became apparent when our server, who was prompt in filling my boyfriend's water glass, seemed to conveniently overlook mine. Initially, I brushed it off, thinking it might be an oversight. However, as the evening progressed, the pattern of differential treatment became increasingly evident. What struck me the most was the overt hostility and indifference I encountered throughout the meal. While my boyfriend received polite and attentive service, my requests were met with dismissive glances and delayed responses. It was disheartening to witness such blatant discrimination in a supposedly inclusive and welcoming establishment.

As a customer, I believe that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their race or background. Sadly, this was not the case at The Works. The discriminatory behavior I experienced left a lasting impression on what should have been a pleasant dining experience.

I sincerely hope that The Works takes this review as an opportunity for introspection and reevaluation of their staff training and customer service practices. No one should have to endure such treatment based on their race, and I trust that steps will be taken to ensure a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all patrons...

Last evening, my family and I decided to go here. My husband called to see if there was parking available. The receptionist hung up on him. He called back to ask the same question and she hung up again. The third time he called she immediately hung up. All he was able to say was hello. He proceeded to call three more times and he was sent straight to voicemail. My cousin decided to call from her phone and the receptionist answered. She answered the same question my husband asked of her and even gave us her name. When we arrived the hostess, Mikayla, who was also the receptionist, seated us. The tables were dirty and we had to ask for it to be cleaned. I don't understand why she would seat us at a dirty table to begin with. That was the first red flag. There were only six people in the restaurant. This was the second red flag. We decided to stay because we were already there and the dining options are very slim. Everyone ordered burgers and fries. The fries and sweet potato fries were horrible to say the least. They were hard and dried out as if they reheated them. However, I must say the burgers were good. We told Mikayla about the fries and she immediately wanted to fix it. Although we declined she brought them anyway. The fries were definitely a better batch and hot. Mikayla should not be the face and voice for this establishment. She lacks customer service and needs training. Our first time in Canada was not a great experience at all. My family and I have been coming here for a couple of years, and we love the staff and the atmosphere of this restaurant. I’ve tried other Works locations, but this one truly stands out.

What makes this location special for us is how they consider my daughter’s needs. She has a serious food sensitivity that makes it hard to find a sit-down restaurant where she can safely enjoy a meal. Cross-contamination between certain food groups can cause problems for her, and most restaurants in St Catharines either can’t or won’t take the steps needed to help.

Here, it’s a completely different experience. Kevin Blundell and his team are always attentive, careful, and accommodating. We visit often, and we have never had any issues with her meals. That kind of reliability is rare, and it gives our family peace of mind to enjoy eating out together.

We really appreciate the extra effort Kevin and his staff put into making sure every detail is handled with care. Their kindness, professionalism, and commitment to customer service are unmatched.
