Red Star has a nice big menu, which seems to be the rarity in Manitoba. That was my main draw to this restaurant, the variety.
First visit to Red Star we dined in the restaurant and I honestly thought that the food was fantastic. It came out piping hot and the waitress was very nice. Ambiance in the sitting area was quite nice. However the bathroom was not great, as it was dirty and smelled awful.
Fast forward a bit we decided to do a large takeout order. We ordered a lot of different dishes and my first thought was why are the takeout bags so small? I began to worry we didn’t have enough food to feed our party. Unpacking the paper takeout bags it was clear that portion sizes are extremely small here. I’ve never seen such small portion sizes with Chinese takeout. The absolute standout was the jaw dropping size of the side sauce (such as sweet and sour sauce, honey garlic sauce and lemon sauce) they are absolutely ridiculous! Literally only enough for one person! There is not enough sauce to go around a table of people. I’ve taken pictures, as you will see I’ve placed a fortune cookie beside the sauce cup for size reference. Anyone who actually likes a lot of sauces on their order will be hugely disappointed in this! I would never ever order takeout for a crowd here. As for the flavour of the food, it was decent. I just cannot wrap my head around the portion size of anything for the high price point they charge!
I’ve given this restaurant a fair trial and am sad to say we...
Read moreI'd like to start by saying, I've been here many times with my wife. the last few times we've had red star have been rather disappointing. It seems they're doing what grocery stores are doing... keeping the same prices and making smaller portions. Honestly, with so many Chinese restaurants in town, I don't need to order a (kids meal) from red star. Just an example...the last time I ordered a combo plate chk balls and shrimp, I got 3 whole shrimp and 3 chicken balls with a bit of rice and veg and was still hungry. Now, I ordered the same combo plate from another Chinese restaurant and I have leftovers in the fridge. Never gonna waste my money at RED Star again (because of the kiddie portions) Oh.. and the service was mid. Too busy packing orders in the back and too busy taking care of take-out customers to bother with customers dining in. Good luck trying to stay in business Red Star. I will not recommend this...
Read morePhoned in a pick up order, the phone was answered our order was taken and the food was ready quickly. That's where it ends there. 97 dollars for cold dry Cantonese noodles. An abysmal order of pork in bbq lean pork. No meat or chips of meat in the puny order of chicken balls. Some dishes were actually hot so now I'm wondering if we were served the leftover noodle dishes from the buffet. That's the only reason it could be ready so quickly. Cold shrimp , in the deluxe curry noodles?? How!? Was it the worst I ever had ...No. However for the price point the serving size the food had better be stellar. Not cold recycled cruddy food. No white rice as a bonus served either, unlike other locations in the town. The best thing I found was the spicy mustard served with the pork loin; and that, was packaged like the soy sauce. Hopefully food is better for you. We...
