Have been here several times and have recommended to others. Quality is very good with an extensive menu. Nice to finally have a good Japanese restaurant in the Cloverdale area.
Came here on a Saturday evening around 5:00 and there were only 3 tables occupied at the time. Ordered our food and was quite disappointed on how long everything took to arrive. It took nearly 20 minutes for the chicken teriyaki meal and an additional 15 minutes for the tuna and salmon sashimi order. We had ordered the 3 piece tuna and 3 piece salmon sashimi combo but what we got was the individual 5-piece platters. We were so hungry by then, along with not wanting to correct them and wait even longer, that we just accepted it. The pieces were fresh and of a good size, along with a nice presentation. The waiter checked with us a couple of times asking if we got our rolled sushi orders and of course we hadn’t yet. During this time there were a number of Skip the Dishes drivers picking up orders. Therefore it seemed like preferential treatment was given to them while those in the restaurant were made to wait. The negitoro and chopped scallop rolls came after another 15 minutes and the Hot Night roll 10 minutes afterwards.
As mentioned earlier, the quality and freshness is very good and we would not hesitate to recommend any of the dishes that were ordered. However on this night the service was noticeably lacking which made for a disappointing outing. As we were leaving, we overheard a couple explaining to the waiter that they too ordered the salmon and tuna sashimi combo but got individual 5-piece orders. Hopefully their quality of service and attention will improve to match their quality of food. Will try again.
Have gone back there several times since and the service has definitely improved back to what we previously experienced. Have adjusted the...
Read moreLiving up in embassy rich Ottawa during the early 80s I had my choice of places to eat and new foods to try. My introduction to sushi came during this time - back when this was sitting at the sushi bar, talking with the chef, trying new combinations and stopping well past the point of full. On a business trip to Vancouver I had the urge late one evening and asked a likely local for a close sushi bar would be found - this before every street corner had two sushi shops like today. After passing a quiz (seriously) to see if I knew what sushi was I was led through alleys and back streets to a basement restaurant where I demographically stood apart. By far some of the best I had eaten to that point.
Fast forward 40 years, I now live out west and my diet has morphed to vegetarian over the years, but I still go for the seaweed wrapped tasty rice treats. There is much vegetarian sushi available and Aka Sushi delivers some of the best.
I've eaten sushi all over the Lower Mainland and down the coast to San Jose, but when in town I keep coming back to Aka. The host is such a friendly man, always with a tea pot to fill my cup and a smile of recognition when my family comes in.
From miso, to vegetable Tempura, to gyoza, to the classics like kappa maki, nothing fails to impress and make the family happy. New items (well, new since 1981 ....) such as avocado rolls and vegetarian caterpillars have rounded out the options for vegetarians nicely and we always fill up before we make it through the menu.
Aka Sushi is highly recommended - I have dined in many times, and ordered take out many more with every time (in or take-away) being wonderful. I will return many more times, and hope this encourages others to give it a try - you will...
Read moreBeen dining in and ordering take-out from this place for the last 4 years and I've witnessed the quality of the food decline overtime yet an unjustified increase in prices.
Multiple occasions of finding objects in my food including small rock pebbles in my rice when ordering teriyaki, as well as a piece some sort of metal in a roll. I don't even wanna know what's happening back in the kitchen for something like this to be happening on the regular.
Unfortunately I did not think to take a picture of these at the time but see for yourself the other reviews detailing experiences of finding glass or hair in their food. To anyone reading this, please re-consider ordering from here for your own hygienic safety. There are plenty of other sushi spots around here to choose from.
Their maki rolls completely fall apart because the nori/seaweed isn't wrapped around fully. It shouldn't be too difficult getting that right especially considering maki rolls only contain 1-2 ingredients in the middle. Quite alarming that they don't know the basics of the food they sell.
I would also STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST ordering any tempura items as I have experienced terrible stomach aches after eating their tempura here every single time. I've had tempura at numerous other sushi places and not once had this issue so I'm led to believe they are likely not properly maintaining their fryers.
Atmosphere for dining in is not the greatest either. Wish I brought my earbuds because blasting Maroon 5's entire discography on repeat is a slow...
