Potentially the best 'chaat' food in the greater Vancouver area. We are south Indian immigrants with very high standards when it comes to quality of Indian food be it southern or northern Indian, plus we eat a vegan diet. One of us grew up eating tasty chaat street food (samosa chaat, tikki, bhel puri, etc.) in Chennai, India.
Having tried a whole slew of restaurants in Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, New West and Surrey (and mostly being disappointed), we believe Desi Rasoi has the most consistently good chaat food in the GV metro area. Nice bonus that they only have vegetarian food, with vegan substitutes for egg based products. The Chole Kulche brims with flavor as does their spring roll while their chaat fries are amazing too (potentially the best fries we've eaten in our lives - why don't more restaurants experiment with seasoning french fries like this?) --we're including photos of these 3 items with this review.
We are also always happy to see and really appreciate the staff at Desi Rasoi including Anushka and Anupreet. When dining in the amount of waste or need to recyle is fairly minimal, for which...
Read moreWe saw this restaurant when passing by and were intrigued by the menu. Finally got a chance to try it to today and were disappointed. We were given a very cramped table, and when a bigger table opened up, it was given to a much smaller party. There was no manager on a very busy night, and the cashiers were struggling to coordinate everything.
The only reason we stayed was because of Raj. He really helped us out with getting a better table, and was super nice.
The paneer patties in the burger were unseasoned and didn't taste too great. The burger was loaded with mayonnaise and ketchup and just overpowered it all.
We were really disappointed with the lack of management - the staff on shift were really trying their best to make things work, but better leadership is definitely needed. We were initially told that the manager is off for the night, but we later saw him talking to one of the employees. I tried to wave him down so we can talk, but he ignored me and went to the kitchen. When I asked a staff member to call him, they said he had left...
Read moreThis place was absolutely fantastic. I visited today on Sunday, May 8th @ 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM roughly and specifically drove out from my home in Coquitlam because I had heard good things. Brought my mom and aunt for a Mother’s Day snack and despite some usually picky pallets there wasn’t a complaint to be heard.
In a totally refreshing change of the norm this place had exceptionally friendly staff. You order straight from the table QR code and they bring you the food. Every server and wait staff that brought something out was friendly, smiling and genuinely seemed to care. I can’t tell you how many “apna/desi” restaurants let you down when it comes to service and act like they are doing you a favour to help (it’s extremely off putting). This was not the case here at all and the rare experience where I felt I had to praise the owner/operator and their whole team. I will surely be back and recommend it to others.
Finally the packaging for the to-go items was perfect and spill proof, thanks again for a great...
