Ok heres the full honest review! If you love the 80s you'll find this place pretty cool! You walk in and its cafeteria style where you use a tray, select your drinks and desserts( to the left. ) We got the pink strawberry cheese cake slice and the regular cheesecake. Both very good!! Theres containers of toppings on the top shelf if you like berry topping. (You can also buy whole cakes in a different display.)
Once you decide, you order off the boards to the cashier. She was friendly and took our order but reminded us they close at 8, ok good it was only maybe just 7:15. We picked our seats, the food came fast, and thought it was great as we still had half an hour to eat.
We were shocked that the portions were so huge! The kitchen staff were nice and laughed with us when we were grabbing the plates. We ordered a double burger, small supreme sub, a side of mashed potatoes and gravy( the gravy is very good ) and the spaghetti and meat balls. Everything was really good! The music was all 80s which was nostalgic, a tad loud but made you feel like you were eating burgers at an old rollar skate rink! We were really enjoying ourselves....until about 7:40 when they started rushing about, closing everything up. Ok fine, but out of no where the main lights got shut off as the customers we were all still dining maybe 3 other tables and ours. Huh they shut the main lights off???...WHILE WE WERE STILL EATING! lol What the heck? We thought it was a mistake as people are eating, it was much darker and not subtle! Nope is was intentional. lol We were kinda shocked and tried to laugh it off as it was a friday night and we got the not subtle hint and it wasnt 8.
To make it worse a lady literally came up to our table with a trolley and literally stood BESIDE OUR TABLE!! Clearing each plate as we ate, waiting, one by one...stood there... lol Essentially forcing us to leave before we even finished because we were so uncomfortable. I went and bought some to go containers up at the front and packed up our food. A few min later I went to the washroom for maybe 2-3 min came out and the restaurant was completely empty!!!! It wasnt even 8 o'clock yet and the other lights we all off except the kitchen, where one guy was cleaning up. I looked at my cell for the time thinking did we over stay? Im always respectful of time it wasnt even 8. I couldnt believe all the staff was gone and I was in the dark and the gate was almost across the door. Lol Its a huge restaurant and there were other customers, But gone already?! Was weird. It was soooo awkward and totally ruined our enjoyment and the first initial impression of how cool we thought this place was with decent food. We spent $86 and tipped well, $17 dollars in a casual place where we, order, seat ourselves, then grab our own food up at the counter style place. Over all we'd like to go back and try more items, JUST DONT GO AT CLOSING. It was INCREDIBLY RUDE honestly. We dine out a lot, and I like doing food reviews but never have had this experience in any restaurant everrrr. Lol I HIGHLY suggest they change the closing practice to at least start it AT 8pm with the lights, music and clean up. I get you want to go home. Ive worked in food and in retail so I get it, especially with lingering customers. We werent. It was so off putting to the point it was bluntly rude. In todays era of online reviews and people looking for different places to try in not just food but the customer experience, even if in an old dinner, this place REALLY needs some customer appreciation put in thought before the hours of closing at 8pm. We spent a lot, tipped well and were on time being respectful of closing time. We had a good 15min still at least to finish our dessert. I had to pack it and take it home. We will try it here again but thought an honest review and experience might help the business keep more customers as I love to support mom and pop shops and support local. As a former business owner myself I'd want to know. Overall, worth trying it here if you like old school food...
Read moreSaw that fresgo’s is still open and damn it, that warmed my heart. The great reviews and appreciation of its decor are so great to see. I’m 49 now but I remember going to the fresgo inn as a kid in the 80’s with my parents and our friends from church after Sunday morning service. I remember going as a teen, hanging out with my friends to watch a canucks game or needing some late night food. Always getting the same thing. The Bacon Cheeseburger. My older brother always got the super sub. So I ordered it too so I could be cool like him. I took my girlfriend, now wife, there and tried to help her see fresgo’s the way I did. With love. I ordered the super sub the night my first kid was born at Surrey memorial hospital in 2002. We were up late and exhausted but we were also hungry. I did the same thing in 2005 when our second came around. I’ve gone there on good days and sad days. I remember taking my kids there when we’d visit the area, having moved to Alberta in 2005. That burger has been on my top 5 list since I first bit into one. I remember stopping in on my own on a trip back home for a funeral. I was on a mission. I wanted a tray. I asked to speak to Walter but he was busy at the moment. I asked the cashier if there was a way to buy one of the serving trays. They looked at me oddly for a second but I think anyone that works there must be aware of the history of the place. Just take it, they said. I looked at them to see if they were being serious. They were. I waited for the perfect moment and snuck that tray out without getting caught! I’ve never felt more alive. It now hangs on my wall as a prized possession. Every time I look at the logo, I’m flooded with feelings of warmth and fullness and friendship and home. Of being safe and accepted and cared for when I needed that in my life. Thank you Fresgo’s and thank you Walter. You’ve made such a difference in my life and I know there are many many similar stories out there. As long as fresgo’s is there, I know I can always...
Read moreThis restaurant is legendary and a must try spot for anyone new to town. If you are someone looking for fine dining, tux and tie sorta place, i suggest you keep browsing. Unless you like to dress up for fun while you enjoy a great meal then look no further! Each order is mega sized, ive never left once after eating my whole meal (trust me ive tried). This restaurant is iconic to surrey and a place to bring a layed back and relaxing date, your family for dinner out, or on your own for a bite to eat. When you walk in you have a large menu board and you place your order right away. Grab your drink to tge left first for juice and pop. Want a beer or vino? Order it with your food. You will get a beeper, go grab a seat and wait for your beeper to alert you your food is ready. Pick it up at the far right of the kitchen (its obvious with signage). Dont forget to grab your cutlery and ketchup before sitting back down. If you have room for desert, which you wont, so order it to go! Everything including deserts is made fresh daily. Their pies and loafs of bread (yes you read that right) are legendary. This place has been owned by the same family forever. And guess who the chef is?! The same guy whos been cooking there since day one! None other than the infamous owner of the place. I think thats the main reason the food is so good. Because its being cooked by the person who has the most heart invested. Been going here since i was a baby. And oddly enough my parents went on dates here lol. And now the third generation in pur family now eats here as my two year old loves the place too!...
