SUKHANOV Ukrainian Kitchen — Restaurant in Thunder Bay

My partner and I were in the mood for a hearty soup and we were in the neighborhood so thought we would try this restaurant. All the food is homemade by the family that owns and runs Sukhanov. It is a small menu but seems like a good mix of stuff for a satisfying meal. I had the borscht and my partner had the transcarpathian soup, and we shared a cabbage roll. We both thoroughly enjoyed our soups, my borscht was excellent. I could have definitely eaten a larger portion, so perhaps it would be worth considering adding a larger size option as well. My partner also really enjoyed his soup, very meaty with a nice smoked sausage flavour. The cabbage roll was pleasant, quite mild and made with chicken instead of pork and rice like you might be used to. This is just a teeny little restaurant with three tables and the family cooks everything offsite and brings it in. It kind of feels like going to someone's house for dinner, in a very nice way. I thought this was a very creative and cool approach to take since it's super hard for people to find commercial restaurant space for rent in Thunder Bay. I would love to see more small food businesses operate like this so we could have even more tasty choices here. I would definitely go back and am looking forward to trying the honey cake next time! The food was delicious! I took my father here and he almost cried as the perogies and cabbage roles reminded him of his Baba's. He even mentioned the perogies were actually better than the ones he grew up with! He also mentioned how flavourful the cabbage roles were. He was surprised that they didn't taste bland (most cabbage roles he tries are very bland) while being as healthy as they are! I loved the atmosphere, its very warm and cozy.
