I have been going to California sandwiches since 1972. Mostly at the original Claremont St location and the last few years mostly the one on the Queensway near Kipling. I love their steak sandwiches and especially the sauce. On Saturday afternoon, April 2 at about 3 pm I was leaving Chesswood arena and I saw the sign for California Sandwiches and decided to get a sandwich. I ordered one HOT steak with EXTRA sauce, one MEDIUM steak with EXTRA sauce and a medium container of sauce. Sadly I was taking them home to eat. These were the worst sandwiches I have ever gotten at a Californias sandwich!!! I don't know if the people that work there care at all about what they are doing or what they are putting on the sandwiches. Both sandwiches had NO hot peppers at all!! The sandwiches were nearly dry, very little sauce, I ordered xtra sauce!! As if this was not bad enough, the steak was dry and chewy, I was choking on it and the sauce!! It tasted exactly like Campbells Tomato Soup!!! I do not doubt that tomato soup was added to this sauce, it was a busy day at Chesswood arena so they were very busy. I know what their sauce tastes like, I always get an extra container of sauce, what was on my sandwich was NOT their normal sauce! So to sum up: NO hot peppers at all!! Dryed out steak, very little sauce when I ordered xtra sauce and the sauce tasted like it was a can of tomato soup!!! How they stay in business is beyond me.. I will never go back to that...

Terrible sandwich quality. Bread was like 2 days old. Very inconsistent portions and flavours compared to other locations. Scarborough location is the best huge generous portions and much better flavour. Also prices went up again what a rip off. There are far better veal chicken steak sandwhich places in the city. California actually is very overrated. Nothing speciial but hey its ok once in a while. Lastly they dont accept credit card. What a joke. They are definately cashing in cash in there pockets which I will be notifiying the CRA about as they are charging tax and putting into there pockets. Which resto in this day and age doesnt accept credit card especially when youre charging an arm and a legs for a lousy sandwich. This location is terrible. Very cheap owner management. Our whole office turned off. We will still visit the much better locations that are much more generous and accept credit card. Our whole office of 27 people will not be returning here especially after finding out that they dont accept credit card even on large order. Come on give me break. cheap cheap cheap...

wow i didnt know the prices at this location is so sky high. i was passing through and thought i'd drop in since i was hungry. i havent had cali-sandwich for over a year and ive remembered eating it often for $9.25 spicy veal deluxe all inclusive at the dixie location when ive worked in the area. it was really well made and good at that location. this chesswood location charges over $13 because my "deluxe" costs an extra arm and leg of $4 from the regular veal sandwich. i did not know this place makes a different veal deluxe sandwich. this place adds tomato sauce to my veal deluxe and made it so damn soggy. i was so hungry and forced myself to eat half a sandwich and only ate the meat from the other half and threw away everything else. never again this location and probably never again cali-sandwich if other location charges this high and prepare this type of veal deluxe. the sandwich at this location was NOT worth over $13. i wouldnt buy at at all from this location. but at dixie, i'd pay maybe at most $10 like ive used...

THE BEST veal sandwiches in the city, bar none! Even when compared to other locations of California Sandwiches, Chesswood stands head and shoulders above the rest. Only the original store down on Claremont is even close! HUGE sandwiches, not swimming in a hot-table, getting soggy and overcooked, but freshly fried veal and made to order, heaped onto gigantic kaiser-style italian panini, ask for either 'Hot Veal', Medium, or 'Sweet' based on how much roasted chopped jalapeño you enjoy. Their zesty marinara sauce is so perfect, I could drink it! Add toppings if you like for a couple bucks more, from, provolone, onions, peppers, sauteed rapini, or even fried eggplant! Meatball, chicken, steak, sausage or veggie sandwiches, you can't go wrong! Giant drink selection from Brio to Beer, plus sides like olives, salads, and new pasta too! Say hi to the lovely ladies for me who have run this place for decades, and trust me, get extra napkins, I PROMISE you're gonna need 'em!

I’ve been going to California Sandwiches for decades even back when it was just the original on Claremont. Generally the food is decent and can vary a bit from location to location but Chesswood seems to have gone downhill in quality and certainly low in value. For $14 you’re basically getting a giant bun with a couple slivers of heavily breaded meat. These are very very thin pieces of meat almost paper thin. So it’s breaded meat on a hunk of bread with sauce and hot or medium peppers or none at all if you want “sweet” or mild. Years ago you actually got sweet peppers. Now if you order sweet you get nadda. Just sauce. Unless you’re desperate for a sandwich and like a thick bun with little inside or have deep pockets then I’d pass. I’ll never go back and I’ve been here since they opened!!! You’re getting very little for your money . Sorry never again.

Food was what I usually expect and enjoy, however, I walked in and was not greeted. I stood there for maybe around a minute before asking a staff member if they were open after being blatantly ignored whilst they were chatting. If they weren't open they could've just let me know and I would've Gladly waited. Definitely feel there is room for improvement with the service, the food is unreal and I have no criticism on that. After spending around $50, you would at least expect average service at the bare minimum.
