Located inside Hasty Market, a supermarket at the South-East corner of the intersection of Yonge St. and Davisville Ave., Flaming Stove offers fantastic shawarma wraps to grab on-the-go for busy Torontonians. I've tried their falafel wrap for lunch on my way to work as well as their chicken shawarma wrap for dinner on the way home from work.
The falafels were a bit on the drier side for my personal taste (even though it was during lunch hours so they should have been relatively fresh). On the contrast, their chicken shawarma I could wholeheartedly recommend to anyone considering to grab an affordable lunch/dinner to grab on the go.
Their wraps are packed within their freshly baked in-house raj bread, of which you could visibly see them making from the scratch in front of your own eyes. This adds much to their credibility and authenticity while it also brings exquisite flavour and texture to their wraps.
I recommend asking them to put every topping inside your wraps as well as their in-house spicy mango sauce, a combination of which brings a truly dynamic mixture of fulfilling flavours within your palate. The chicken meat was not dry at all, grilled/roasted just right to be juicy, tender and flavourful.
Their falafel wrap and chicken shawarma wrap both came out to $16.94 each after tax and the portion of each wrap is plentiful to keep you full for a good whole day.

Read moreFlaming Stove has earned quite the reputation for itself in Toronto. Tucked in the back of a convenience store, their shawarma wraps are better than most of their competition around the city — it's on the same tier as shawarma I've eaten in the Middle East.
The shawarma itself is perfectly cooked and seasoned nicely. It's served in saj bread, which is a large flatbread akin to roti or dosa. The large wrap is needed for the array on ingredients they pack into the sandwich!
Unfortunately there weren't roasted/grilled vegetables available when we were there (based on other reviews it seems to sometimes be an option) but the ingredients that were available (tomato, lettuce, etc) complemented the meat nicely. My favourite was the pickled turnip. The sauces were all good as well, although the hot sauce was milder than I was expecting (next time I'll go for a double dose).
One of the main negatives is that only one staff member assembles the sandwiches, so you might need to wait in line (especially now that the secret is out about this place). One potential workaround is that they have a second location in Newmarket, which I intend to visit to compare with this restaurant.
Overall Flaming Stove is a great shawarma spot and worth going out of your way to Davisville...
Read moreFrom now on, whenever I hear the term "hidden gem" I'll be thinking about Flaming Stove. I have never heard about this place before and probably would never have found it if it wasn't for a friend visiting from Vancouver. She did her research!
This place is hidden in the back of a convenience store and known mostly by locals. Many of them passed through while we were eating at one of three tables. Judging from the conversations we overheard, quite a few customers were also coming here for their first time.
On the tail end of a food crawl, my friend and I decided to share a saj (traditional Middle-Eastern flatbread), filled with chicken shawarma and all the fixings. First of all, the saj was huge, probably close to two feet in diameter! We watched as it was being assembled and loaded with all kinds of fillings - lettuce, tomatoes, onions, turnips, sauces, and then shaved rotisserie chicken. Wow! It was then rolled and toasted whole before being cut in half.
It tasted amazing! All the ingredients played well together to create a delicious sandwich. Every bite was flavourful. We loved it!
They offer a variety of specials during the week, including Thai, Jamaican, Indian, and Cajun dishes. I'm sure...
