Went here today for lunch. We have been looking for a good fish and chips place that does fry in beef tallow and doesn’t use beer in the batter. After lots of calls, we found this place.
Got take out. Hubby got fish and chips and I got the fish burger with fries. Hubby came out smelling of oil after ordering so that’s something to be aware of.
Overall, the batter on the fish was light and not too thick. It was not too crunchy or soft. The fish was fresh and tasted good! The bun was soft and fresh. For a lunch, it was a good sized meal for me.
Hubby wished he got more fish. He did get a large piece of fish - just one fillet. But for the price of the fish and chips, he expected a larger portion.
The fries were made in-house but there was something missing from them. I’m not sure if it’s the type of potato they used, but I feel like there could have been an improvement on them. Hubby was hoping they would be larger home style wedges like in England, but they were regular fries. They were not bad at all, but I felt like they could have made the fries more English style chippies
My favourite thing about my sandwich was the coleslaw. It wasn’t made with mayo, but with a slight vinaigrette. The taste was really nice. I wish they would have given us their in-house tartar sauce instead of packages of tartar. It would have enhanced the overall experience.
Would we come back? Because our options are limited by not being able to have beer batter or tallow, this is our only choice. We might come back for...
Read moreDon't listen to these people that didn't wait for the line up on opening day, they missed out! Free Halibut Fish n' Chips what do you expect, long lines, or small fish, poor fries, fried food, etc. nonsense, blah, blah, blah. I live very close, so we set up an outdoor table at about 8pm, with malt vinegar, lemon wedges, ketchup, tartar sauce, salt and pepper, and heated plates and a cocktail bar, and I waited, and waited, and waited, but it was worth the wait. Finally my two faithful food runners returned with 2 BOGO orders of Halibut fish n' chips for the 3 of us. Let me tell you, they were some of the biggest pieces of fish we have ever gotten from a chip shop and the fries were done perfect. We were laughing because the orders were so big. The batter was crispy and not greasy. The fries were crispy and not greasy. None of the 3 of us could touch that forth order so I had one order as leftovers which I reheated on parchment paper in the toaster oven for breakfast because I was dreaming about it.
Update: No longer as good. Third time going there and fish was not as fresh, fries were undercooked, and everything was greasy. Had to beg for water and condiments and tartar sauce from other tables. Going to look for a new fish and chips...
Read moreCame here for dinner during opening week as I was not willing to wait in line for opening day. There was still the BOGO 50% off deal. I can't say it was the best experience, but it definitely wasn't as bad as some of these patrons are trying to make it sound. There was a lot of seating available indoors and outdoors. I came on a weekday after 7:30pm. The servers were quick to come by and take our drink orders. However when we tried to order the special, we were then told about the "fineprint" on the offer, which was we HAD to order a regular fish and chip (no add-ons/substitution) and whatever else we wanted. I added a poutine to my fish. When the order arrived, it was a good sized piece of fish, with fries in a ramekin and cheese curds on top, NO gravy (sorry, forgot to take this picture). I waited, assuming they were going to get the gravy. They did not come back until I flagged them and the gentleman laughed when I asked if this was all that's in a poutine. Clearly, the kitchen did not know what's in a poutine. I also found the fries greasier than I would enjoy and the tartar sauce extremely watery. But I did enjoy the clam strips. All in all, good sized portions, but not the best fish and...
