Got the Halibut + Chips from there for the first time because of the positive reviews I saw on here. Unfortunately, this place had a near-perfect mix of everything wrong, and is the worst fish+chips I've ever tried. I sincerely hope this isn't how they usually taste, and perhaps today was just an off day, but won't be returning to waste time+money verifying that. the batter and fish were bland--the actual portion of fish inside the batter was also barely noticeable; chips seemed under-cooked, they had the texture and taste of raw potato; and the tartar sauce packet was awful, it tasted too sweet and had no other flavor (they also charge 5cents/ketchup-sized packet, if you need extra). The only positive factor from this place was that the service was good; the lady at the front was friendly and helpful, and the food was prepared expediently--but I would rather have waited an hour for better tasting food.

All in all, this place has nothing on Olde York Fish and Chips on Laird (they also have better value for the quantity+quality of food) maybe I shouldn't bother trying new places. Even The Pickle Barrel serves a better Fish and...

Went there after a recommendation from my Brothers Coworker.

Pros:- -This place looks different and has an amazing decor with all the scottish memorabilia and fish facts.

-Went there in Snow so it was mostly empty. There are lot of seats and good amount of space.

-The Halibut and Haddock were both amazingly cooked with Crispy layer. The best i have ever had in Toronto so far.

-Fresh and thick Chips .Even Cold crunchy ones tastes amazing with Coleslaw.

-Great tasting creamy coleslaw with Shrimp and Scallops(Both Greasy) complementing the fish.

Coffee tasted dark ,fresh and great.

Cons:- The only downside i could find is the service which is why i am giving 4 stars. The person who served us seemed dry and wanted to get it over with and did not check on us for refills at all. They looked understaffed as there was only one cook and one waitress. There were no greeting or smile from any of them and cook acted as a cashier as well. Update : On second visit ,the person who served us was jolly and engaging . Great service with a smile. Updated to 5 stars.

Other than that ,i recommend it for...

The batter here is all popped out, exploded, with deep crevasses that trap the grease. It is not English style batter, thin, crisp, and smooth. It is puffed up with cornstarch and baking powder like a shrimp batter. It traps the oil and can't be blotted, rough. The fish was so thin they must have cut it on a meat slicer. Fries were ok, but bland, pale, and flavourless, (under done). Not what we call dirty fries, hand cut, with a little peel still on them, golden and crispy, no! But the fish, this was one greasy sonofabitch! I better get my cholesterol checked. Won't be back. But you may like a good sit down of deep fried batter and grease with no inkling of what good English Style Fish n' Chips are like. "So have at er'. Aye maties. Enjoy yer special. Reminds me of Hwy 400 Sun Fish on a Bun $2.95 long weekend. Arrrrr Billy!"

Forgot to take photos BEFORE eating because the food was so hot and fresh and had to take a bite before it cooled down ever a little. This was my mom’s and I’s first time eating here and was instantly pleasantly surprised by the reasonable pricing compared to other fish & chips spots. We both ordered halibut and chips and the batter was perfectly crisp and light on the fish and included 2 pieces of fish and a generous amount of fries. My ultimate pet peeve for fish and chips is when the batter falls off when you’re cutting the fish but that didn’t happen here at all! We both thoroughly enjoyed the whole meal and the service was also really great too. The decor is very humble and outdated but that’s a clear sign of great food in my book. 5/5, we plan to come again!
