The has to be one of the best Thai restaurants in Toronto.
Every dish was so flavorful and delicious
We ordered multiple dishes and shared. This would be my recommended way for enjoying this place.
The food is spicy so lightweights beware. You can ask for less spicy, which would be a medium spicy.
We shared 3 tom yum soups (2 chicken, 1 shrimp). They were not overly large bowls but the amount of ingredients in the soup was crazy. Tons of chicken and tons of large shrimp. Definately worth the price and tasted very good. Chicken and shrimp cooked perfectly.
Pad Gra Prao: This was insane. Absolutely amazing. The flavor of the crispy pork was on point. Perfectly sweet, spicy, salty, and umami. This kind of charred flavor was so strong and amazing. It was as if it was torched with butane prior to coming out. MUST TRY.
Prik Pao Talay: This was so creamy/coconut-y. The sauce was phenomenal. I would have eaten this fish with 5 bowls of rice alone if this was the only dish I was getting. There was so much large squid perfectly cooked. Not chewy at all. Perfect texture. Mussels and clams were delicious as well. There were probably only a couple clams that weren't open but I'll let it slide because this dish was so well made. MUST TRY.
Khao Meow Gaeng (pineapple dish): this dish was pretty epic. The most spicy of the dishes we got even as a medium spice due to group restrictions with spice level. It was sweet and spicy. We had large shrimps with small pineapple chunks soaked in this spicy curry sauce. The sticky coconut rice was sweet and complemented everything so well it was literally a flavor bomb. This is a must try. MUST TRY.
Khao Pad Pla Bonito; this was a fusion rice dish with mackeral and what seemed like infinite mountain of bonito flakes. The rice dish was enormous and severed ultra hot in a stone pot. The following fish was flavorful but the flavor of mackeral was strong. Not as strong as a raw piece u get from sashimi. But maybe 25% that level. If you aren't a fan of mackeral, I would skip. But otherwise, you will bust a nut.
Pad See Ew: texture of noodles was perfect. Chicken cooked perfectly. Seasoned perfectly. White pepper generously sprinkled on the top. Delicious dish with no faults.
Note: 18% gratuity was included for our group of 6 people. We did feel also a bit rushed as there was a limited...
Read moreWe knew we couldn't leave Toronto without trying Thai food, and after much searching online, we decided to try walking into Koh Lipe. Though we arrived around 30 minutes after opening on a Sunday, we were able to get walk-in seats on the second floor. They were quite busy so food took a while to arrive, but boy was it worth it!
Someone online had recommended the mackerel fried rice (khao pad pla), and it blew my mind. This is my favorite dish I've had in a while. The rice is chewy and each grain is full of flavor, and there is a crisp from the hot bowl. The fish and bonito flakes and whatever other magic ingredients they put in produce a wonderful umami flavor bomb. There's also a spicy kick as well as a curry flavor. It's also huge -- we couldn't even finish half of it, despite my best efforts. I am normally not the type to order mackerel or fried rice at a restaurant, so I never would have gone for this dish if not for the online recommendation. So thank you! It was incredible and definitely my favorite Toronto food memory.
I also liked the yum sapparod (pineapple seafood salad) -- while I don't normally like the combo of sweet and savory, the pineapple was delectably ripe and the shrimp was the perfect texture. It was very refreshing and a perfect refreshing counterpart to the rest of our meal. I didn't like the squid as much in this -- it still had the inner membrane and felt maybe a tiny bit undercooked. Smaller pieces might have been easier to digest. But this is definitely a great dish! Tons of seafood and delicious pineapple.
We also got the kor moo gaeng kua (pork jowl curry), and I didn't like this as much because it turns out I don't like pork jowl (very interesting texture)... but that's my bad, and my dining partner enjoyed it. I also tried a bit of the vegetarian khao soi and it was good! I really liked the texture of the noodles.
We really wanted to try the mango sticky rice because it sounded really unique, but after struggling to make a dent in the food, we canceled the order. I thought that two entrees and a salad would be a good amount of food for 2 people, but I think it could've fed 3-4 people...
In conclusion, the mackerel fried rice is amazing, pineapple salad is delicious, and the rest of their menu looks incredible. Definitely...
Read moreJUST MANGO STICKY RICE AND REQUIRE A TIP AND RUDE TO CUSTOMER ??? SHOULD I LEAVE $10 for $14 of MANGO STICKY RICE? Pls read all of my words to know clearly and exactly. I went to this restaurant a few months ago and it was good and polite. Though the limited time was 1,5 hour but they gave us time and the server (foreigner woman) at that time was superb. We had nothing to complaint from the foods (see the photos below), cocktail, the service and the cute view inside. However, I am going to the dessert next to their place today and they closed, so I decided to choose MANGO STICKY RICE from KOH LIPE for our dessert. We already known that they will close at 10:00 pm so we asked them if we could have a table and we will eat quickly in half an hour. Then they agreed and gave us the bill immediately. Pls noted that when other tables still waiting for their foods and they asked us to order and pay first :) Okay I'm happy to pay by cash and the guy who serves us he realize that he does not have the TIP. He comes quickly to our table and asks "What's wrong with the service/server" about 2 to 3 times and "I do not see the tips". I answered to him we just have the dessert, and he replied "That's fine!" 😑😑 I am truly to tell you this. I went to Thailand - your country from Bangkok, Phuket, Khaoyai city, and the Thai people are so nice, enthusiastic and friendly. I do not know what happened with you here. Next, if you want to get a TIPS. Pls smile and say hello and be nice to me when I suggest I want to enjoy a dessert. It means I know your mango sticky rice and let me finish it first instead of paying and looking your bad attitude to me. I was customer service and I would say the truth. You will get for what you have done to the others! When you are in Canada, pls understand the mix nationalities and we are from different cultures. Choose the way of serving like yours, pls go directly to Canada government and ask them to change the laws, put all the tips to all of items in the restaurant 🙄
❗️bye and would never back here again. I was so wrong to recommend to my friend and post on my ins story...
