This one breaks my heart a bit, as this place always seems to have vibes. I love the nights when I pass and there’s karaoke, with the joy of people together, united in off-tune singing. Today, on my way home, I decided to stop in for a tres leches to go. It was $13.56, and I waited 24 minutes to get the cake. It took so long that my friend said: “What? Are they making it from scratch?” I said: “I have no clue, but the rain has come down harder as a result of the delay.” To the staff’s credit, they kept checking in, so it wasn’t that situation of they’re taking so long, I’m getting annoyed and needing to inquire. They kept coming to say “not too much longer.” It was surprising, as there were maybe 6 other tables occupied, but I figured they all seem so sweet, just something happening as they ready themselves for the potential dinner rush. The tres leches was teeny tiny. That would be fine if it at least tasted good. It was dry, dry, dry. Tres leches! Dry!! The tragedy; and for the record, I live on Baldwin, a 4-minute walk away from the restaurant. In the container was some condensed milk at the bottom, a tiny bit, barely spread, zero love to just pour some of the can there. It was AWFUL, and the worst part: I think they used something that had garlic and onions on it because the seasonings from that could be tasted in the tres leches. Like, you know when your mom cuts your fruit with the knife she’d use for cooking, and suddenly your apple tastes like garlic and culantro and onions and jalapeños? It was exactly that on this extra dry, stale tres leches. I’m super disappointed. I’ve been eating my way through Kensington Market, and I thought I’d get dessert today, food another day. But this tragedy caused me to lose faith in any other food. It’s truly a shame, as meals in this area are generally exceptionally good. I do want to reiterate that the people were lovely. It was only the tres leches that 0/10, and 0 is being generous. I’d give it a negative...
Read moreA couple of weekends ago, my best friend and I ventured to Kensington Market, and on her recommendation, we decided to dine at La Ceviccheria. From start to finish, the experience was nothing short of spectacular.
We began with the Ceviche Azteca and chips with guacamole, and I’m still thinking about that ceviche—it was, without a doubt, the most delicious I’ve ever had. The fish was incredibly fresh, juicy, and the combination of flavors was out of this world. The guacamole, too, was so vibrant and fresh, it truly set the tone for what was to come.
For the main course, I opted for the shrimp tacos, which the kind waitress highly recommended, and my friend had the fish tacos. We couldn’t resist swapping one of each to sample both, and I can say, without a doubt, these were the best tacos I’ve ever had. The shrimp tacos were seasoned to perfection—every bite packed with flavor. My friend, after trying one of mine, was literally licking her fingers by the end of it!
What made the experience even more special was the opportunity to chat with the owner. We had a lovely conversation about food, culture, and their passion for creating authentic Mexican cuisine. He even shared that the chef holds a Master’s in Gastronomy, which was incredibly impressive and spoke volumes about the quality of the food we were enjoying.
Overall, this was an unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait to bring my family and friends here to enjoy the same incredible meal. La Ceviccheria is truly a gem, offering authentic Mexican flavors with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I’m already counting down the days until...
Read moreLively atmosphere, friendly people, however the food is very meh for the price you’re paying. Yes, the ingredients listed on the menu are all there but it’s not a substantial enough amount for you to feel like you’re really getting what you payed for. My friend got the vegan tacos and the mixed organic veggies looked a lot like the type of veggies you get in the frozen food aisle. And the taco was dominated by this and not the beans??? You’d think a business opening in Kensington market would have better vegan options. The fish tacos I got were pretty plain as well. We also got the mixed drinks to go, they were fine but they were nothing to write home about, and certainly not worth $15. That’s the price of a specialty cocktail at upscale restaurants. It’s not an upscale restaurant cocktail, it’s a Moscow mule in a 16oz mason jar. This definitely feels like a spot that attracts tourists and ppl who don’t live in the area. I lot of the things they promote feel very gimmicky and like they’re trying to get BlogTO to notice them. It looks appealing because of their makeshift patio, however I cant help but feel bad for the ppl working at the abnormal beauty company. The patio is basically at their front door. I’m sure some ppl still like it, however there are yummier and cheaper places on the same street. I live in the area and it’s not someplace I’d recommend to my friends. It’s not BAD food i just expect more at that...
