I decided to finally try this location. Iād heard good things about the owner, the history, and I genuinely enjoy supporting local businesses. The retro interior was a nice blast from the past, but unfortunately, thatās about where the positives end.
I ordered a 12-inch assorted sub combo, and right away, the sanitation (or lack thereof) was shocking. The owner wasnāt wearing gloves ā not unusual if youāre careful ā but moments before handling the food, I literally watched him picking his nose. Then he wiped his hands on his pants and grabbed the ham, lettuce, and toppings with those same bare hands. No handwashing, no care. Just slapped the sub together in the sloppiest way possible.
But it didnāt stop there. I asked for a chocolate milk with my combo, since the sign clearly says it comes with a drink. Instead of explaining anything politely, the owner barked at me, āCANNED ONLY, CANNED ONLY, CHOCOLATE MILK IS EXTRA, BOTTLE IS EXTRA OK?ā while pointing at me like I had just insulted him. Thatās how you treat a new customer? How about posting your rules somewhere instead of screaming at paying customers like theyāre a problem? Every other sub shop Iāve been to ā if it says drink ā it means drink. Period.
The whole thing left me fuming, but I paid (cash only, by the way ā yet another inconvenience) and got out as fast as possible.
And the food? Mediocre at best. Cheap ham, barely any flavor, and all I could think about was the grime from the ownerās hands all over it. Sure, the price was decent ā around $10 ā but honestly, Iād rather spend a couple bucks more at Mr. Sub or even Subway to get a sandwich that actually has flavor, proper toppings, and is prepared in a sanitary way.
I had high hopes for this place, given its history and reputation, but the reality was the opposite: filthy practices, rude customer service, and a mediocre sub. I wonāt be coming back, and Iād strongly caution anyone else from wasting...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf you liked the original Mr Sub and similar sub shops, and not this present day version of 30 sauces, 20 types of sub buns and 50 different toppings that will take the attendant 15+ min to serve 2 customers, then this is your place. The subs here are quality made and delicious, and the owner is a great guy running the business since he opened it in 1974.
Like the old days -- lettuce thinly sliced, Spanish onions, and your standard subs/meats. They slice all the meats and veggies fresh and on site (like was done back in the beginning).
All was good here in Canada before Subway came along and complicated things with their chips, bread ovens, excessive toppings and worst of all, the thick cut of lettuce.
If you want a taste of how it used to be then pay this place a visit! We need to support small independantly run businesses like this, and keep them in business for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI'm from the Danforth, but was in New Toronto and needed to grab a quick bite. Love a good traditional sub and was not disappointed. This place probably hasn't changed in 40 years and that's a good thing. Reminds me of the best old school restaurants on the Danforth and also Bellybuster sub up on Yonge north of Lawrence. George is a nice friendly guy and gave me a nice cheerful greeting when I came in which is nice (and sadly also rare these days).
I had a double meat Club for under $11 and was stuffed, and I have a big appetite. Tasted great. Nice white bread, fresh toppings, and love the classic shredded lettuce. Tons of meat. Will make a point to come by whenever I'm in the...
