I attended Le Gourmand at 152 Spadina Ave, Toronto based on the words "the worlds best cookies". Personally I love cookies and have been searching for a place that has it! When I walked in the café the atmosphere felt a bit dark but I saw the sign that read order here. The girl at the counter seemed ok I was brand new to the place so I felt kind of overwhelmed looking at the menu to order but, I spotted the Turkey Club Sandwich, So, decided on the sandwich, chocolate chip cookie and an almond slice of cake. On first impression this café is quite pricy. I still thought it should be great. While I processed my payment the girl at the counter dodged off and returned with a box. I didn't want to appear pushy so I didn't ask but I thought they would offer the receipt but it didn't happen. So, I was left holding this box unsure if that was my full order or not. I started hearing other customers getting an order number so, I returned to ask her if what I had was my order and she said no it was the pastry items that I had to wait on the other side for the sandwich. So, I stood regretting I tipped, not having a order number and felt out of place. So, with the pictures you'll see the sandwich is thick and half size for $13.99. It tasted good but portion wise for the price you decide. The cookies to me isn't the world's best but it did taste good. I split the cookies to get a clear look at the size. My opinion reflects service as it's hard to find good service in Toronto. I don't mind paying lots if the Service I receive is great I would not be rushing to return here as the service is not quite worth the price for me. Perhaps, you can decide if you enjoyed the service should you decide to check the place out.

I hate giving low reviews but this place is so awful. We also visited twice (not by my choice), so unfortunately, I know it is not a fluke. First, you have to traverse through a bunch of construction to find it (not their fault but does not help with the overall experience). All the tables were dirty from previous patrons, and we didn’t see anyone wiping them down the two times we were there. You bus your own tables and the bussing station is in a similarly sorry state. They’re also not that busy so not sure why the service is so awful. The blonde cashier that we encountered twice was just chatting with the other staff rather than taking our order. When she finally paid attention to us, she was unnecessarily cold like we were bothering her. Again, this happened twice. The first time we went, we only ordered a cookie and a cappuccino. The coffee was mid and the cookie took so long the another staff member noticed and apologized, which was nice of her. The second time we went, the sandwiches behind the glass looked sad, so I got the kathu roti, which was drowning in sauce and became very unpleasant to eat midway through. My partner got the egg bacon croissant - the eggs were rubber, croissant was also mid, and the whole thing was too salty. They also called the wrong order number (we were the only ones waiting for food). The only good thing about this place is the cookies (which bumped this up to two stars) but not worth the troubles.

I've come here for their cookies twice- the first time I ordered their original chocolate chip, and today the salted butter and caramel variety. The cookie is dense in texture (thick with a slight crispness on the edges and some chew in the middle), and I found the balance of sweetness with the other flavour components to be best in the salted butter and caramel cookie. I appreciate good cookies, and though these ones at Le Gourmand had a delightful bakery quality to them, they weren't exceptional and neither were they memorable (unfortunately). They're missing salt flakes, and both kinds had left me longing for the satisfaction of biting into something decadent in texture and in richness (the cookie is simply lacking the sort of complexity you'd expect from something carrying a prized reputation in the city). The cookies aside, we also ordered a chocolatine and a hot chocolate. The chocolatine was buttery and dense in texture. The layers had all collapsed in the inside, leaving a hollow mass between the bed of dough and the upper crust. It tasted great, and I'd imagine even better fresh out of the oven. Note that this is not a flaky croissant. The hot chocolate was sub-par. It barely had much of a chocolate taste to it, and the chocolate wasn't mixed in well (much of it was sitting at the bottom of the mug). The milk on the other hand was properly frothed. I wouldn't order it again.

If you plan to go just for take out you may not experience any issues. I voted for them in chocolate chip cookie contests and the cookies are good.

Unfortunately, today I tried the brunch and it was a very uncomfortable experience. We arrived around noon which is a busy time and they don't take reservations. There were no tables available and we were okay to wait. We ordered 2 cappuccinos, pancakes, French toast and a box of cookies. I asked if they could bring out our order when we grab a table. After 20 minutes or so, the server was walking around with 2 cups and I figured it was ours. I informed her that we can't hold it because we are standing and our hands were full with the cookie box. She said we can get it to-go and I said that I don't want the cappuccinos if they become cold and I wasn't open to the to-go idea.

I also asked what we should do if the food arrives and we don't have a table. How unfair of us to ask this?! About 5 min after, a very tense and rude staff approached us. She had a tantrum and said that they can't control table availability and they won't give us new/warm cappuccinos and it is what it is. We asked if the food is not ready, maybe we can just get a refund and leave it at that. She said that the food is ready and we can do a take-out. Basically, we paid and got kicked out. I ordered an Uber and the food wasn't ready as fast as she claimed. By the time that the Uber arrived, a table became available. So anyways, I cancelled Uber and paid $5 fee. I didn't want to eat cold French toast and pancakes. We also had to eat from the box so didn't get the nice presentation.

It's sad that there is a place that actually serves decent baked goods but has such an inefficient process. I was looking forward to buy more cookies and pastries for a party tonight and inquire about bulk orders for our work events. But the attitude and the horrible customer service experience ruined it for me.

Maybe on weekends, table seating can be limited to 30-40 min. There were tables being occupied by customers who had bought just a coffee and then people like us who spent way more money had to experience staff's tantrum. That lady ( sorry I was too scared to even ask her name) really degraded Le Gourmand and brought down the establishment.

Also, do not send orders to kitchen if a table is not ready. There can be some process improvements to avoid these uncomfortable situations which helps both your staff and customers.

Tip to other customers: Do not order unless you have secured a table. Otherwise, the brilliant staff expect you to hold your plate or will force you to have it as takeout. I love cookies but I hate being disrespected...

Le Gourmand on Spadina is a local eatery that, despite its charm and delectable offerings, has struggled to consistently get orders right. While the establishment boasts an inviting atmosphere and a standout item in the form of their delectable cookie, the occasional mishaps in order accuracy have left some patrons feeling a bit frustrated.

The allure of Le Gourmand lies in its cozy ambiance and the promise of a satisfying culinary experience. The warm and welcoming interior draws you in, inviting you to indulge in a delightful meal or snack. However, the downside emerges when it comes to placing and receiving orders. Some customers have reported instances of incorrect orders or missing items, which can understandably dampen the overall dining experience.

Amidst these hiccups, there's a standout star on Le Gourmand's menu—their irresistible cookie. This delectable treat has garnered a reputation of its own, with patrons singing praises about its perfect blend of gooeyness and crunch, along with the rich and balanced flavors that make it a true standout. The cookie has managed to create a loyal following, often becoming the highlight of a visit to the establishment.

While the occasional order mishaps may be a point of concern, it's worth noting that Le Gourmand seems to be aware of their room for improvement. The charming atmosphere and the draw of their exceptional cookie may often balance out the occasional frustrations, particularly for those who are willing to give them another chance.

Le Gourmand's journey serves as a reminder that even with a standout menu item and a welcoming setting, consistent attention to order accuracy is vital to providing a truly satisfying dining experience. While they continue to refine their operations, patrons can rest assured that their visit will be brightened by the indulgence of that remarkable cookie, a shining beacon amidst any minor...
