I visited this place 3 times before writing an accurate review. Listen to me now, you must visit this spot, this is the closest that you can get to authentic tacos like in Mexico. Everything starts with the service, some will receive you at the cashier to take your order, all 3 times the service was fantastic, welcoming, kind, and super friendly, exactly like a Mexican family business feels. The space is clean and simple, there are no sitting tables like in a regular restaurant, and there are benches to sit on large sharing tables. The decoration is very simplistic, to the point that for a long time, I didn't try the place thinking it was not an authentic Mexican spot (I was very wrong) So if you pass by do not fool yourself this is not a food chain or a fake modern taqueria, this place is the real deal. Los Compas has a very simple menu, they only offer 4 main flavours (Pastor, Asada, Pollo and Nopales) and this is the perfect example of that some times is better to have a short menu that perfects each flavour. First, the Pastor, there is no place in Toronto that makes such a perfect pastor like los Compas, they use a proper Trompo, the marinate is perfect and they always give you (as supposed to be) one piece of COOKED pineapple, love it! Next is the Asada, juicy and tender beef, that hits all the spots on a generose portion. The Pollo is not the protein that I normally order on tacos, I conciderate way too basic, but los compas made it spectacular, it is smoky, juicy exatly like a pollo al carbon in mexico, bravo! Finally, the nopales, are good, honestly, I won't order them again unless I am craving a cactus salad. I will suggest changing the Vegan offer for something more substantial with protein, like mushrooms, beans, or soya texturizada. At the start of this place, what holds each taco to a heavenly and authentic bite is their tortillas, OMG I have mentioned in many of my reviews how good this is a place but their tortillas ruin the flavours... Well in los compas they do FRESH HAND MADE tortillas BY ORDER!!! If you are new to the Taco world and you have never tried tacos in Mexico, this will change your standards of a real taco. You can see the ladies making them all the time with a fresh Cazuela full of masa. Each taco is provided with salsa, guacamole, lime and cilantro, all taste great especially the guacamole salsa, however, I have to say that some larger orders of tacos did NOT received extra lime, which is a same as a Mexican you expect a proper ratio of lime for all your tacos. One bad aspect was that on our last visit, a friend with an avocado allergy asked for no guacamole and no cilantro, however, his order arrived with everything, here is something to work with! More attention to the orders, please! Finally, they offer complementary salsas, pico and radishes, very good! I love that they are all placed on some pork molcajete, sadly on my last two visits the pico molcajete was empty during our whole visit, so they did not refill it twice in a period of an hour.
I also recommend a lot the Tortas and Burritos for a more filling order, the portions are amazing.
I always order a horchata, they are good, but feel a little loose, a more creamy horchata will work better in my personal opinion.
Thank you Los Compas for bringing an incredible quality of Tacos to Toronto, I wish I was closer to having these tacos daily!
This is one of the best...
Read moreI was little hesitant giving a review because I don’t like giving a negative review but I was really disappointed with my order.
I ordered through Ubereats and I always look at reviews before placing an order. I was so excited to try this place due to the great amount of positive reviews and such great ratings. Mexican food is my favorite and I’m always looking to discover a new gem.
I ordered a chicken taco, an open-faced chicken quesadilla and a chicken torta. The taco does not come with cheese but the open-faced quesadilla and the torta does. I received my order and both of them did not have any cheese on it! Isn’t cheese the main ingredient of a quesadilla? I love cheese so you can imagine my disappointment. The prices are not cheap either. The chicken was absolutely delicious and tasted exactly like the chicken I would have in Mexico if not better. The corn tortillas were amazing and all the ingredients were fresh. They followed my notes of having the guacamole on the side which I appreciated.
Despite loving the chicken, I don’t know if it will be enough for me to order or go there again. Missing one of the main ingredients of a dish and still charging me full price for the items is pretty disappointing. I really hope it was just an oversight but how do you miss the cheese on a quesadilla? I thought perhaps they had a different type of quesadilla or maybe the torta didn’t come with cheese but I went back to look at the menu and it is the first ingredient listed!!
Also, my food did not look anything like the photos posted on here. My food was prepared fast - it feels like it was rushed, messy and not a bit of care was given about it!!! Would have given 2 stars because I’m not happy with my order at all but the chicken was really good so it was only fair to give...
Read moreI have been hesitating about writing this review for the past 3 months. The truth is, the food was not as impressive as the other reviews suggest, and definitely on the expansive side of the fence.
To give context, I went at about 9 pm on a weeknight by myself. I decided to order 4 tacos on corn tortillas, one of each, plus a drink and the featured dessert. Personally, I thought the tacos were a bit bland, to the degree I couldn't tell which protein was which. The tortillas also lacked texture and were a touch stale. I will, however, admit that the desert was great. The total came to a bit more than 50$ (about 30-35$ without the desert), which is definitely on the expansive side of what is offered in Toronto. If we look at Gus, for example, everything is 1-2$ cheaper. It doesn't seem much nominally, but in total, that averages to ~20% price dip. What I am trynna say is it's hard to justify these prices when the food isn't remarkably better, especially since there are so many good options just 500 meters away in Kensington Market.
I acknowledge I'm not Mexican, and maybe my taste buds simply don't appreciate the quality of this spot. It's also possible I was one of the last customers and got some produce that had been sitting a bit longer than usual. That's why it took me so long to write this review. I could not reconcile all the other amazing reviews and my personal experience. It made it even harder that the cashier (the owner, I suspect) was incredibly nice and friendly. Nevertheless, I believe these reviews are only useful if they are honest. Thus, this is my honest review. I'll make sure to revisit to sanity check my first experience, and correct this review...
