It's an OK from me, unfortunately - could have been so much better with improved service and attention to detail because the bones are good.
Location is very good. Peter Street can be a bit busy in places - you're in the Entertainment District after all - but that also means you're a quick walk from many of the attractions in the downtown core (and the streetcar) Check-in was slow because they only had one woman on reception when I arrived and she was spending a looong time explaining the map of Toronto to some guests. I suppose it's irrelevant because my room wasn't ready anyway, but she did store my bags and say they'd make it a priority and she would let me know when to come back...which she did. I'm Hilton Gold which they acknowledged via email and on arrival. It's supposed to get you an upgrade, breakfast or food credit etc. They often try to wriggle out of the room upgrade because of space, but I think this was a particularly poor effort at giving me a nice room. I'd booked a Corner King and ended up on the 3rd floor (lowest) available, overlooking a parking lot and facing a wall, with some loud machine outside. It's the first time I've gone back down to ask for another room, and thankfully a different receptionist moved me to the 9th floor which was quieter. Rooms are nicely decorated and the corner kings at least are quite spacious. Bathrooms are small, but have handy drawers and the hairdryer and clothes steamer are good. The water pressure in the shower is poor and you get no amenities like shower caps etc, but shampoo/conditioner/body wash/body lotion are provided. Cleaning was good. Bed was comfortable, TV was huge but laggy, nice big full-length mirror with lights and a sofa with table as well as a desk. Plenty of power outlets, and my room had a Nespresso Premium which can do hot water, tea and coffee and a mini fridge.
Housekeeping was hit and miss. The first morning they removed the room robe and didn't replace it, didn't replenish wash cloths and took away a cup and glass which they left of the floor outside my door...but also didn't replenish. Day 2 they still hadn't cleaned my room by 4pm even though I'd told reception about the robe and they got someone to replace that. I informed reception and the guy looked like I was being entirely unreasonable expecting my room to be cleaned. Yikes. They eventually did it. Have to say reception and the ?managers wandering around were often quite unwelcoming (with a few exceptions).
I did get my room credit ($18/day) which can be used at the Muse Cafe in the lobby, or the Deauville Club on the 2nd floor. I used Muse the first 2 mornings for a quick bite (takeaway the 2nd time) and staff were pleasant both times. Standout was Marvin who was very efficient and competent, managing to train someone in as well as be pleasant to me. The last day I went for a more leisurely breakfast in the Deauville Club. I was welcomed by the lovely Chloe and my credit just about covered some oatmeal which was huge and tasty. Julia looked after my bill as I was leaving and what an antidote she was to a somewhat disappointing stay! An absolute gem - so warm and authentic, and made me almost forgive all the other irritations.
Miscellaneous: little gym and cycling studio which are pretty good. Elliptical, Pelotons, treadmills etc, cable machine, dumbbells, TRX and some bands and bits and bobs. Massage chair in each of the rooms, which has a QR code for you to pay - I found that quite tacky. The gym felt a bit warm and stuffy to me if actually trying to work out, but fine for gentle movement. Refillable water bottle in the room with water and ice machines on each floor
Tl;dr: Nicely appointed rooms with comfortable beds in a good location, but sloppy service means I doubt I'll return, and it's kind of inspired me to stick with other hotel brands I use more. More Marvins and Julias, and I...
Read moreStart at 5 stars Cost was fair, but still a bit on the higher side at $200+ per night all in for a basic room. Docked half a star. Parking was only available for 6' or under vehicles, due to use of parking elevator, so we had to park in an outdoor lot for $40 overnight, per night. Docked half a star. Location is excellent, walking distance to great food, shopping and entertainment. Room was clean and included fridge, microwave and free internet, all of which were used and appreciated.
If that's all that happened, it would've been given 4 stars or even 4.5 stars.
However, cups for drinks and bathroom were all disposable, and only 2 for coffee and 2 for the bathroom were provided. The 2 coffee cups we used immediately once we got into the room. This would've been fine if they were easily replaced by hotel staff. Here's where a full star was lost. We had to call down to request actual glasses be brought up to the room, as the paper/foam cups were disintegrating as we drank pop and other beverages out of them. We figured that by using glasses, we could save on the cost of the cups as well as the environmental cost. They brought up 3 glasses on request, but only after 30 minutes and 2 calls were placed. The person who brought up the glasses looked like he had just finished working on a car engine - quite dirty. Later that evening, we had a couple friends join us, (we were two people, with 3 cups, now 4 people with 3 used glasses), so we called down again to ask for additional glasses. The guest services reception then refused and began to question us, which is weird as even if we had damaged or stolen the glasses, we have a credit card on file which they could have easily charged for any issues. After a lengthy conversation and with me beginning to get upset, I gave up and just asked them to send us some additional foam cups. They sent up 3 foam cups a while later.
The issue we all had was that for $200/night, you would think that providing glasses would not be an issue, to the point where staff is arguing with guests over the phone, especially for a Hilton branded hotel in the heart of a major city.
We did not use the pool/gym facilities or restaurant while we were there so I cannot comment on them, though from the pictures they look quite nice. I would've given 3.5 stars if the choice was available, but since it's not, 4 stars seems high, so 3 stars it is.
I would consider staying here again as the...
Read moreThis hotel is in an excellent location, close to the Entertainment District and lots of amazing restaurants and bars. It used to be a Garden Inn and has been completely renovated into a modern, clean, chic boutique hotel. In fact, every time we entered our room, it smelled new. You enter off the street into a cafe/bar with lots of seating. The lobby is very clean and modern with futuristic vibes. We got an early check in which was great so we could change and clean up for our matinee show. Parking is only by valet and costs $65, but there are plenty of overnight lots for $15-30 within a 10 minute walk. We tried HAAM, a sushi/taco restaurant across the street -- highly recommend it!
Pros: Very clean. HVAC worked well and it was cool when we wanted and warm enough when we wanted. Room was quite large with lots of storage and seating. Large TV. Free coffee and fridge. Refillable water and ice station in each floor. Nice products in bathroom. Robes were in room for use. Good water pressure and temperature. Rain shower and handheld stick in shower. Light controls for entire room at bedside. Plenty of regular and USB outlets. Modern amenities eg lit full size mirror, hard floors, led light, clean storage (hidden away). Halls and lobby were clean and well lit.
Cons: There are 3 elevators, but 1 was always broken and they were quite slow. If it were busy, you might be waiting for a while. The walls and doors are very thin, so you can hear all the other doors close in the hall. We had a group next door who was having a party and we could hear their music and conversations clearly. Front desk was great about asking them to be more considerate. The duvet and pillows are crinkly so every time you move in bed, it is noisy. The pillows are VERY soft. Bathroom door is a sliding door (which seems to be on trend with hotel renovations).
Overall, the convenience and cleanliness of the hotel made it a pleasant stay. We booked through Hotwire, so felt it was a...
