When it comes to defining a restaurant as a 'hole-in-the-wall', this place is exactly that. As a matter of fact, it has become my first stop on my way to Toronto for one particular rare find that goes by many names - Appam to the south Indians, Hopper to the Sri Lankans, and some people even refer to them as idiyappams. For a food with so many names, they are such a rare find because they have to be eaten as soon as they are made. It's a bowl shaped carb that is spongy in the center and crispy on the sides and is generally made with fermented rice batter. Ruchi takeout definitely has the best - they are so good that even though it is a takeout restaurant, the owner knows that I stand and eat them inside so he doesn't even close the curry containers. The Hopper goes excellently with either the chicken curry, mutton curry or tomato curry! There are three kinds of hoppers here - the plain hopper, the milk hopper where a touch of coconut milk is added for sweetness and texture and lastly the egg hopper where a whole egg is cracked into the center. All delicious but I usually get one plain hopper and two milk hoppers. At the end of my quick meal, I generally get a madrass coffee to go with a laddoo (a sweet ball-shaped dessert that is made with either gram flour, black sesame, or semolina flour). Go get...
Read moreHello Ruchi, from my 1st time experience today You doesn't even deserve 1 star for the quality of service and food you provide . I was very unfortunate to see the certification from food and safety for their restaurant states " CONDITIONAL pass". I had a terrible experience, I have ordered through phone and my order was expected to be ready in 15 min and when I reached the store , my order wasn't ready and I had to wait 45min and when about to pay by card, their cash register computer system is not even switched ON. There was also another customer who had the same experience today. Chef had to come to from kitchen to try it and He doesn't even know to operate it properly and after switching On, He found its code locked and manager is not available on site. Some how they got help through phone . In the end when I reached home, The food ' Poori and potato gravy' tasted literally Very Bad. It's terribly salty and oily. If anyone from Ruchi take out is reading this today ,Please taste your 'potato masala gravy 'served with poori and you will know how bad is it. I feel bad to write this , But I dont want any one else to experience this and the manager should act more responsibly to run this business. The money people pay for products is hard-earned, respect...
Read moreWe had family visiting from out of town and I wanted them to have some authentic South Asian food. Chef Babu was very helpful and patient with us when deciding what to order. Their menu is exclusively online. We ordered two non veg combos and mutton dum biryani. We came in around 12:30 and they didn't seem to be busy but it still took quite a bit of time to prepare our meal. Chef Babu made a point to address our complaint.
The food itself was very good! The curries were very flavourful with a good amount of spice. The mutton curry was a bit dry, but still had a very good flavour. The Mutton Dum Biryani was the tastiest dish and the meat was very generous and tender. Our family of 4 + 2 kids managed to eat this for both lunch and dinner. Overall, I'd say the Veg lunch/combo is a great deal for what you get and the dum biryani is worth the price.
I would love to eat here again but would recommend that you order ahead to avoid the wait time.
Also of note: there were four staff members and no one wore masks or gloves while...
