I personally think this bakery is good but seriously overrated. Don't get me wrong -- the bread, scone and banana bread were very good, but I don't think world-class. I felt the crumb on the bread needed more time to rise (too heavy) and crust was not thick like traditional sourdough. Banana bread was average -- glad they used butter, but it had been frozen which killed the texture. Scone was excellent, hot from the oven. Soft chewy centre’s, with a slight crusty exterior, just hard enough, but not so much you can break a window with it the way the hip bakers across the city are doing it these days. St. John’s easily has the best sourdoughs in the city. There is a range in variety of sourness and I find myself torn between Angelicus and Maria loaves. While I should try the other varieties, they do run out of bread fast and of course I do enjoy the usual suspects, so don’t feel like I am missing out.
