READ TO THE END
I came to Toast on Bloor for Father's Day with my dad & his girlfriend. They're regulars, but this was my first time. I ordered French toast & sausage, thinking it was regular breakfast sausages. After 2 minutes, I asked the server Caroline, how many sausages came with the order. She explained it was a single Polish sausage, which I don't eat, so I asked to change my order to pancakes & bacon. She said she had to check with the kitchen and returned, saying it was too late to change because the food was already on the grill, despite ordering less than 5 minutes ago. Caroline insisted I had to pay for the food even if I didn't eat it. As someone with restaurant experience, I found this protocol odd. I thought small restaurants might have stricter policies, but food waste is typically written off as a regular expense.
I agreed to keep the French toast since no alternative was offered except adding bacon. When the toast arrived, it was basic bread, not worth $15. I took two small bites & didn't like it. My dad & his girlfriend witnessed this, as I started writing this review before I touched my plate. After taking my barely touched plate, she asked if I wanted a to-go container. I declined & waited for the bill since I was treating my dad to breakfast. When the bill came, the French toast was still on it of course. My dad asked if we were being charged for it, and Caroline said yes, as she had called her boss and informed her that the food was "untouched". This was a lie, as I had taken small bites. I'm so happy I took a photo of my meal to showd I didn't enjoy it (photo attached).
My dad reasoned with Caroline & she eventually removed the charge. We paid / tipped & she returned with the phone so my dad could speak to the boss, who recognized him and confirmed their usual drink order. My dad said the owner and her son are nice people. I would've let it go if the charge had been removed with no issues or if I was allowed to change my order in the beginning. However, being lied about is what made me complete and share write this review.
Guest experience should be a priority, but that seems to have changed. I'm disappointed with my Father's Day experience at this establishment. Retraining & new protocols for guest turn around experience are definitely needed.
On the plus side, my dad & his girlfriend enjoyed their meals, and the pineapple mimosas were good.
Overall, I rated the atmosphere a 3.5 for its cozy charm. Rated the food a 3 as my dad and his girlfriend enjoyed their meals but I didn't enjoy mine, also, their first round of mamosas were served with "bottom of the box" pineapple juice according to our sever & that's why their's looked more like champagne & mine looked more like pineapple juice (the server didn't offer replacements for their unfinished drinks and charged for another mimosa instead). Finally I gave the service a 1 due to the poor handling of the situation by the server. I wouldn't recommend this place based on service, which unfortunately is supported by other one-star reviews. However, if you want to give it a try I'd say go for it. Just do your research beforehand so you know what to expect.
Response: I didn't read the sides on the menu and ordered my usual "French Toast & a side of sausages." The server missed the chance to inform me it was a single Polish sausage, which isn’t typical at brunch spots. This should be confirmed with future guests who are not ABLE to read the menu.
I didn't complain about the food because Caroline already said I'd have to pay for it regardless. Nothing would have been done based on the initial response.
To confirm,it was falsely stated the French toast was "untouched." I tried it to give an adequate review despite the poor experience & I was willing to pay, but my parents insisted it was wrong to charge for it.

Read moreI’ve been to this establishment a few times pre-pandemic for dinner. This time I went to Toast on Bloor for breakfast based on my previous positive experience.
Two stars because food tasted great as usual. The problem is their service. Like many others have pointed out., they’re disorganized and have slow/bad service. I’d also like to point out the owner has been saying they’re understaffed and they’re looking to better the situation… same copy and paste response when people complain. Why isn’t the situation getting better?!
We were a table of two and arrived at 10am. The worker asked for my name but didn’t writer it down anywhere and told us to come back in 15mins. We returned 15 mins later only to be greeted as though we hadn’t spoken before… I reminded the same person I had already given my name and returned to be seated. We got seated within a few mins. So far nothing bad. Then everything went south from there. What would have been a 5-star experience became 2 stars.
15 mins before someone came to our table to take our order. Note: The server simply asked to see our proof of vaccination. Didn’t ask to see our ID or validate the information. She barely glanced at our phone screens. 35mins before I approached the server for an update on our order. I’m used to fast to moderate service during breakfast (I expect slower service during brunch time). Additional 5mins for an update which was “food will come out in 3minutes”. My friend’s dish did come in 3mins. No issues with her order and appropriate food temperature. 12mins for them to bring out my food as there were several corrections that needed to be made- salad dressing came mixed in when I had asked for it to be on the side. The pirogies were cold, so were the onions on top. Bacon pieces were missing. I was told since I didn’t get pork pirogies they assumed I don’t eat meat… over an hour wait from the moment I sat down to get a plate of 8 perogies which I’m sure weren’t made to order but just boiled and put on the pan. There’s no excuse for this type of service.
At no point were we told they’re understaffed or receive any apology for the wait, incorrect order… nothing. After paying for the meal the same lady who forgot my name earlier offered us a 20% discount coupon for the next visit. I declined and stated we won’t be returning. Then the attitude started. I were told that was my choice to decline the coupon, that they’re busy and understaffed…. WOW. Just a suggestion, it’s for your benefit to acknowledge your customer’s frustration before they’re about to leave the door for the last time. I probably wouldn’t have been upset if you had communicated you’re understaffed. I saw zero effort coming from you throughout our hour-long stay to the restaurant. We came to your restaurant because we wanted to support local business and because I’ve had enjoyable dining experience in the past. Had you offered us that 20% today that would have made a difference in our experience. To expect us to return another time and take a gamble on how good or bad my next experience will be isn’t worth it. We’ll most certainly not return. It was my friend’s first and last visit as well.
P.S The couple seated behind me left without ordering because they too were ignored for a long time. Smart move on them. A table nearby there was a lady who had pointed out to the server she had specifically asked for no bacon on her order of pirogies. They should pay attention to what customers...
