Yikes..definitely a disappointment for me. First and foremost, the staff were great. Personable and very friendly, can't complain at all. For the food, however, quite a let down I should say.
My wife and I ordered a mcgangster poutine and a lobster Mac and cheese. The poutine was your traditional poutine but with pickles, Mac sauce, and bacon. The portion size was great but the execution of the poutine was sub-par (though edible). The poutine felt warm at best (not fresh tasting), and the bacon was floppy and appeared underdone (like microwaved bacon). The pickles are sliced pickles from a jar. If the bacon was crispy and they used chopped dill pickle, the poutine itself would actually be quite decent.
The worst was the lobster Mac and cheese. 5 minutes after ordering, they came out with this huge bowl of Mac and cheese. Sounds like a good thing right? But the Mac and cheese was just lukewarm, so we questioned how freshly made this was. Essentially the Mac and cheese here is: boiled macaroni, melted cheese, imitation crab meat, and some frozen lobster. If you ate the macaroni pasta by itself, there's literally no flavor. They don't use any sauce, no bread crumbs. I think we took a few bites and that's it.
Overall, I love the concept here, a restaurant specializing in melted cheese goods. But the food needs significant...
Read moreIn search of a hidden gem in Uxbridge? Look no further than Gangster Cheese! My wife and I recently had the opportunity to dine in for lunch on a recent Sunday afternoon and the Gangster did not disappoint! Poutine is second to none, by far the best we've had anywhere in the Durham area, with a multitude of choices and great portion sizes to boot! The grilled cheese is also a win with so many customization options it is sure to appeal even to the most discerning of critics. Located right off atmospheric old Uxbridge's Main Street (or Brock Street West technically), Gangster Cheese can be found in a charming building that appears to have been a converted church at one time or the other (right down to the 'pews' you sit on at your table!). Once a food truck, now its own dining establishment with a super relaxed vibe, be sure to hit up this fantastic find replete with delicious cheese themed fare, whether for dine in or takeout. Additional bonuses include great service and a friendly owner to boot! Five stars, without blinking, a high value addition...
Read moreNot your ordinary grilled cheese! Thinking about a Big Mac? Try the McGangster! Either as a grilled cheese or poutine. Even comes with "Gangster Sauce "(big mac sauce). It's a dine in restaurant, too! Place your order at the cash register, pay, grab one of the seven booths, and in a few minutes your order will be brought to your table. They have cans of pop or beer from the Wedge and the Old Flame from Port. The fries are thick, crispy and hot, with a fluffy interior, like a Bentley. I had the Durham Sister grilled cheese and everything about it was perfect! My wife and I split the sandwich and the Mcgangster poutine and we were stuffed. Unfortunately, I couldn't see a way in for people with mobility devices. I don't recall seeing a television in the place, which I find too distracting and loud but some people may miss that. The pictures on the wall are all family photos! One of the actual owner in Scotland, the others of his parents and...
